Eleventh Chapter: The Chapter on Patience. Eleventh Chapter: The Chapter on Patience. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka place, in the city of Rajagriha. At that time, not long after the Blessed One had attained complete enlightenment, initially... and so on, five monks were ordained. After that, the Kashyapa brothers and their thousand monks were ordained. Thereafter, many who were not his followers also renounced the world and abided in the Dharma. The people of Rajagriha experienced immeasurable joy, praising and extolling, "The Tathagata's appearance in the world is wondrous and rare, benefiting many ordinary beings." Furthermore, they said, "What karmic connection did the Kashyapa brothers and their retinue, who were the first to be ordained, have with the Tathagata in the past that they were the first to taste the nectar of the Dharma?" Having heard these words, the monks extensively reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One told them, "In the past, for their sake, I made a great vow, 'Whenever I attain complete enlightenment, may I first benefit them.'" Having heard these words, the monks, thinking about how the Blessed One had made vows in the past, felt great compassion and requested him to explain it in detail. The Blessed One told the monks, "Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. In the past, at a time immeasurable, countless, inconceivable, and inexpressible eons ago, in a country called... ཌ..., there was a king named Strife-Born. At that time, in that country, there was a hermit named the Patient Ascetic, who lived in the mountains with five hundred disciples and practiced patience. At that time, the king, along with his consorts, palace women, and ministers, went to the mountains for pleasure. Feeling very tired, he lay down to rest. The palace women went ahead, looking at the gardens and flowers, wandering around. The Patient Ascetic kept his body upright, his mind very...

Seeing him sitting quietly, they developed faith in him and scattered various flowers at him. Those consorts sat in front of him and listened to the Dharma. The king woke up from his sleep and, not seeing the consorts and the four ministers, searched for the consorts and saw them sitting in front of the hermit. Then he said to that hermit, 'Have you attained the four concentrations of the boundless realms?' He replied, 'I have not attained them.' He asked, 'Then have you attained the four immeasurables?' He replied, 'I have not attained them.' He asked, 'Then have you attained the four dhyanas?' He also replied, 'I have not attained them.' That king became angry and said, 'If you have not attained those qualities, you are just a low-class commoner. How can it be trusted that you are staying with women in a secluded and sheltered place? Who are you who always stay here? What do you do?' The hermit said to the king, 'I am practicing patience here.' Then the king drew his sword and said, 'You say you are practicing patience? Let's test whether you endure or not!' Saying this, he cut off the hermit's two hands and asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am the patient one.' Then he cut off his two feet, and he still said, 'I am the patient one.' At that time, the earth shook in six ways, and about five hundred attendants also flew into the sky and arrived there, saying, 'Teacher, you are experiencing such suffering, has your mind of patience not diminished?' The hermit said, 'My mind has not changed, it has not diminished.' The king was also alarmed and frightened, and said to the hermit, 'How can I believe that you are the patient one?' The hermit said, 'The words I speak are not false. If it is true, by that truth, may the blood turn into milk, and may the severed limbs be restored, becoming as before!' As soon as he said this, the blood turned into milk, and the limbs were restored, becoming as before. The king, seeing that he possessed such patience, was even more frightened and said, 'Why did I harm the great hermit? Please have compassion on me and allow me to repent!' The hermit said, 'You, because of women, took up weapons...'

Even if my limbs are cut off, my patience is like the earth. In the future, when I attain perfect enlightenment, may I cut off your three poisons with the sword of wisdom! After saying this, at that time, the dragons and gods of that mountain, seeing the king inflicting harm and injury on that hermit, became angry and gathered clouds, sending down hail and lightning, as well as iron hail, killing the king and his retinue. The hermit admonished them, saying: Do not inflict harm and injury on them in this way for my sake! The king repented of his sins there, and afterwards, he always invited that hermit to the palace and made offerings. At that time, there were about a thousand wandering ascetics who had taken refuge in other teachers. Seeing that the king had such faith and devotion to the patient hermit, they became jealous and, from a place where the truth was not visible, threw dust, dirt, and the smell of filth at that hermit. At that time, wandering ascetics, you should know that those hundred ten-hundreds (one thousand) people who threw earth at me are now the thousand monks, including River Protector of Light and others. At that time, I made a vow: I will practice patience without interruption, and in the future, when I attain perfect enlightenment, may I wash away your dust and dirt with the water of nectar, so that you may be completely purified of the defilement of desire! Monks, if you want to know who the patient hermit was at that time, do not think otherwise, it is me now. King Dispute-Born and the four ministers, etc., are the five monks. At that time, the practice of patience was because of the vow: to do the things of these people first. Therefore, after attaining perfect enlightenment, he first completely liberated these people from suffering. Monks, the monks, hearing the Buddha's teachings, rejoiced and praised, and were delighted. The eleventh chapter, the chapter on patience, is finished. Eleventh Chapter. Chapter on Patience.
