第五品，海神所问之章。 第五品，海神所问之章。 如是我闻，一时，薄伽梵（梵文：Bhagavān，梵文罗马拟音：Bhagavān，藏文：བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས།，汉语字面意思：世尊）在舍卫城（梵文：Śrāvastī，梵文罗马拟音：Śrāvastī，藏文：མཉན་ཡོད་，汉语字面意思：闻者有）的逝多林给孤独园（Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma），与大比丘众。当时，该地有五百名商人左右，他们商议着要到海里去取宝。他们这样商议：“我们要在人们当中找一个聪明有智慧的人来做领航员。”于是他们带了一个守持五戒的居士，进入了大海。到了大海中央，海神化作一个罗刹，身体极其丑陋，青黑色，獠牙外露，头上燃烧着火焰，来到他们面前说：“把这艘船给我吧！”然后问商人们说：“世间有什么比我更可怕的吗？”居士说：“有比你更可怕的。”海神说：“是谁？”居士说：“世间的愚人，愚昧无知，肆无忌惮地做着不善之业，杀生、不予而取、邪淫、妄语、恶口、离间语、粗恶语、贪婪、嗔恨、邪见之人，死后会堕入地狱，遭受各种痛苦。地狱的狱卒们会把他们带到地狱，有的被兵器砍杀，有的被车辆来回碾压，肢体破碎，有的被用杵捣，有的被绳索捆绑，有的攀登刀山，有的在人车、沸腾的铜水、冰块和呕吐物中煎熬。像这样遭受各种难以忍受的痛苦，长达百千年。这比你更加可怕。”海神听后，立刻消失了。他们又进入大海，海神化作一个极其瘦弱、憔悴的人，只剩下皮包骨，来到他们面前说：“把这艘船给我吧！”

Once, the Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Romanized Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས།, Literal Chinese meaning: World Honored One) was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in Śrāvastī, with a great assembly of monks. At that time, there were about five hundred merchants in that land who were planning to go to the sea to collect treasures. They discussed among themselves, "We should choose a wise and knowledgeable person from among the people to be our captain." So they took a layperson who observed the five precepts and entered the sea. When they reached the middle of the sea, the sea god transformed into a rākṣasa, with an extremely ugly body, bluish-black in color, with fangs protruding, and flames burning on his head. He came before them and said, "Give me this ship!" Then he asked the merchants, "Is there anything in the world more terrifying than me?" The layperson said, "There is something more terrifying than you." The sea god said, "Who is that?" The layperson said, "The fools in the world, ignorant and foolish, recklessly committing unwholesome deeds, killing, stealing, engaging in sexual misconduct, lying, speaking harsh words, divisive speech, abusive language, being greedy, hateful, and holding wrong views, will be reborn in hell after death, suffering various kinds of pain. The guards of hell will lead them to hell, some will be cut and killed with weapons, some will be crushed back and forth by vehicles, their limbs broken, some will be pounded with pestles, some will be tied with ropes, some will climb mountains of knives, some will be boiled in human carts, boiling copper water, ice, and vomit. Suffering such unbearable pain in various ways for hundreds of thousands of years. That is even more terrifying than you." Upon hearing this, the sea god immediately disappeared. They went further into the sea, and the sea god transformed into an extremely thin and emaciated person, with only skin and bones connected, and came before them saying, "Give me this ship!"

The firewood seller said, "Yes, there are those who are even more miserable and emaciated than you." The sea god said, "Who is such a person?" The firewood seller said, "Those who are foolish, ignorant, naturally stingy and miserly, jealous of desire, and do not know how to give alms, after death, they will be reborn as hungry ghosts. Their bodies are as large as mountains, but their throats are as thin as needle eyes, their hair is tangled, dark, and withered, and they do not hear the name of water for hundreds of thousands of years. Such a person is even more emaciated than you." As soon as he finished speaking, the sea god disappeared. After that, the sea god went on and on, and transformed from among the people into a person with a very handsome appearance, and said to the merchants, "Give me this boat." He also asked them, "Is there anyone in the world as handsome and beautiful as me?" The firewood seller said, "Yes, there are those who are a hundred or a thousand times more handsome than you." The sea god said, "Who is more handsome than me?" The firewood seller said, "In the world, there are wise and intelligent people who perfectly practice the ten virtuous deeds, whose body, speech, and mind are pure, who are very devoted to the Three Jewels, and who offer whatever they have. After death, they will be reborn as gods in the heavens, with a beautiful appearance, very beautiful and lovely. Such a person is a hundred or a thousand times more handsome than you. Comparing you to them is like creating a blind monkey and the auspicious goddess." After that, the sea god scooped up a handful of water and asked the firewood seller, "Is this handful of water more, or is the sea water more?" The firewood seller said, "A handful of water is more, the sea water is not more." The sea god said, "Is what you say true?" The firewood seller said, "This is true, not false. How can it be proven to be true? Although there is a lot of sea water, there are also times when it is exhausted and dried up. When the fire kalpa is about to come, two suns will appear, and all the springs and ponds will dry up. Three suns appear..."

之时，所有的水泉都干涸了。当四个太阳升起时，所有的河流都干涸了。当五个太阳升起时，大海也比以前减少了。当六个太阳升起时，减少了三分之二。当七个太阳升起时，大海也干涸了，须弥山王也燃烧起来，直到触及金刚的边缘。如果有人以非常虔诚的心，用手捧起一捧水供养佛，或者供养僧伽，或者供养父母，或者布施给穷人，或者布施给野兽，这种功德即使经过许多劫也不会穷尽。因此，应该知道大海的水是少的，而一捧水是多的。然后，海神非常高兴，他向那位居士供养了许多珍宝，并将那些珍贵的珍宝也献给了佛和僧伽。居士和商人们因珍宝而满足，然后又平安地回到了自己的国家。当时，那位居士和大约五百名商人来到佛所在的地方，用头顶礼世尊的脚，各自拿着珍宝，以及海神所赠送的珍宝，也献给了佛和僧伽。他们双膝跪地，合掌，向世尊这样祈请道：我们也想在导师的教法中出家。世尊对那些居士说：善来。说完，他们的头发和胡须自然脱落，变成了穿着法衣的比丘。世尊为他们宣说了相应的法，后来他们所有的欲望都消失了，成为了阿罗汉。许多眷属对世尊所说的话感到满意，非常高兴。海神提问品第五（终）。 第五品，海神提问品。

When seven suns rose, the great ocean also dried up, and Mount Meru also burned until it reached the edge of the vajra. If someone with a very devout heart offers a handful of water to the Buddha, or offers it to the Sangha, or offers it to parents, or gives it to the poor, or gives it to wild animals, this merit will not be exhausted even after many kalpas. Therefore, it should be known that the water of the ocean is little, and a handful of water is much. Then, the sea god was very happy, and he offered many jewels to that layman, and also sent those precious jewels to the Buddha and the Sangha. The layman and the merchants were satisfied with the jewels, and then returned safely to their country. At that time, that layman and about five hundred merchants came to the place where the Buddha was, and bowed their heads to the feet of the Blessed One, each holding jewels, and the jewels sent by the sea god, and also offered them to the Buddha and the Sangha. They knelt on the ground with their knees, joined their palms, and prayed to the Blessed One in this way: We also want to be ordained in the teacher's doctrine. The Blessed One said to those laymen: Welcome. After saying this, their hair and beards naturally fell off, and they became monks wearing Dharma robes. The Blessed One taught them the Dharma accordingly, and later all their desires disappeared, and they became Arhats. Many attendants were satisfied with what the Blessed One said and were very happy.
