Fourth, the chapter on offering by selling one's body. Fourth, the chapter on offering by selling one's body. Thus I have heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. At that time, a householder in that place had a son born. That boy was well-formed, beautiful, and pleasing to behold. Not long after his birth, he also learned to speak. That boy asked his parents, "Is the Blessed One present now?" They replied, "He is present now." He further asked, "Then, are the venerable Shariputra and Ananda and others present?" They replied, "They are also present." The parents of that boy thought, "This child can speak as soon as he is born; he is not human." Feeling astonished and amazed, they reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One also said, "This son of yours has signs; do not doubt it." Having said this, the parents of that boy were overjoyed and returned home. Then, that boy requested his parents to invite the Buddha and the community of monks. His parents invited the Buddha and the Sangha and said, "We need to prepare offerings, but it is not something that can be obtained immediately." The boy said, "Sweep and clean the inside of the house. Spread out mats. Arrange three high seats and spread them out. Food with a hundred flavors will also come naturally. My parents from my previous life are now in the city of Varanasi; please invite them as well." His parents, according to what the boy said, sent a man on an elephant to invite his parents, and they came. Of the three high seats that were prepared, one was offered for the Buddha to sit on. One was for his parents from his previous life to sit on. One was for the parents who gave him this body to sit on. Then, the Buddha, along with the retinue of monks, went and sat in order on the prepared seats. The excellent food also satisfied everyone. Then, the Blessed One taught the Dharma to them. The two parents of that boy and all the people, great and small, of the entire household, having heard the Dharma, were overjoyed, and all attained the first fruit.

It became. That child later grew up and became a monk. By practicing diligently, he also attained the state of an Arhat. Then, Ananda asked the Blessed One: "What good deeds did this monk perform in the past that he was born into a noble and high-ranking family, could speak from a young age, and quickly attained supernormal powers after becoming a monk?" The Blessed One told Ananda: "In his previous life, this person was the son of a householder in the country of Varanasi. After the householder passed away, he became a poor laborer. Even though he encountered the Buddha, the Blessed One, living in the world, he had no wealth to make offerings. Therefore, he was unhappy and agreed to work as a laborer in a noble and high-ranking family. After a year, he earned a thousand gold coins. A noble and high-ranking person asked him: 'Aren't you going to take a wife?' He said: 'I don't want to.' The person then asked: 'Then what are you going to do with this gold?' He said: 'It is necessary to offer alms to the Buddha and the noble Sangha.' That noble and high-ranking person said: 'If you want to invite the Buddha and the noble Sangha, I can contribute the gold and also prepare food and other provisions. Please invite them to my house.' The poor man also said: 'Let it be done in that way.' So he prepared food and invited the Buddha and the noble Sangha. Due to that cause and condition, after he died, he was born in the house of that householder. Now, he has again invited the Buddha, heard the Dharma, and attained enlightenment." The Blessed One told Ananda: "That poor man from the past is this monk, the son of the householder." After the Blessed One spoke these words, all the many attendants rejoiced and were very happy. This is the fourth chapter, the chapter on offering by selling one's body. Fourth, The Chapter on Offering by Selling One's Body.
