The Minor Discourse on Devas The Minor Discourse on Devas In Indian language: Alpa-devata-sutra (梵文天城體：अल्पदेवतासूत्र，梵文羅馬擬音：Alpa-devatā-sūtra，literal meaning: Minor Discourse on Devas). In Tibetan: ལྷའི་མདོ་ཉུང་ངུ། (lha'i mdo nyung ngu, literal meaning: Minor Discourse on Devas). Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Sravasti, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park. Then, a deva went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, that deva requested the Blessed One, saying: What is morality? What is conduct? What is merit? What is action? How does one abide? What is wisdom? What kind of people go to the heavens? Please, with compassion, hold us devas in mind and teach us. The Teacher made the following prediction to him: Deva, listen carefully to me, what kind of people go to the heavens. Turning away from killing, upholding the precepts, delighting in correct vows. Those who do not harm any beings, those people go to the heavens. Abandoning taking what is not given, always delighting in giving, abandoning stealing, those who do not steal, those people go to the heavens. Not approaching the wives of others, completely abandoning sexual misconduct, those who are content with their own wives, those people go to the heavens. Stealing for the benefit of others, for oneself, or out of fear, those who do not speak any false words, those people go to the heavens. Always separating friends, completely abandoning slanderous speech, those who always delight in harmony, those people go to the heavens. Relying on arrogance and holding grudges, completely purifying harsh speech, those who speak gentle words, those people go to the heavens. Completely abandoning meaningless and useless chatter, those who always proclaim the Dharma at the right time, those people go to the heavens. In towns or in quiet monasteries, those who do not generate any attachment to things owned by others, those people go to the heavens. Not harming others with loving-kindness, without the intention to harm, those who do not harm all beings, those people go to the heavens. Those who have unwavering faith in both karma and the ripening of karma, holding correct views and perspectives, those people go to the heavens.

Earth-goers. These virtuous dharmas are the ten paths of pure dharma. Whoever correctly holds them, those beings will go to the heavens. Brahmins who have passed beyond sorrow, who have passed beyond all enemies and fears, who have crossed over attachment to the world, I have not seen many of them. After the Bhagavan spoke thus, that deva rejoiced and praised what the Bhagavan had said. The Short Sutra of the Devas is complete.
