The Sutra of Impermanence. The Sutra of Impermanence. In Sanskrit: Anityata Sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of Impermanence. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, unstable, unreliable, and subject to complete change. Monks, therefore, turn your minds away from all conditioned phenomena. Monks, be without attachment, without clinging, and be liberated. The end of life for any sentient being, any living creature, any living thing, is death, and ultimately they will die. There is no one who is born and will not die. Any wealthy householder lineage, or wealthy Brahmin lineage, or wealthy Kshatriya lineage, possessing great wealth, abundant riches, great enjoyment, possessing jewels, pearls, beryl, conch-shell stones, coral, gold, silver, abundant wealth and possessions, possessing abundant grain, land, gold, treasuries, and accumulated granaries, possessing many male servants, female servants, and those who live on wages, possessing many friends, relatives, and in-laws, the end of life for these people will also be death, there is no one who is born and will not die. Any king who is crowned from the Kshatriya lineage, ruling the country, obtaining power, dwelling in manifest victory in the great circle of the earth, the end of life for these people will also be death, and ultimately they will die, there is no one who is born and will not die. Any ascetic dwelling in the forest, eating roots and fruits, enjoying roots and fruits, living and subsisting on roots and fruits, the end of life for these people will also be death, there is no one who is born and will not die.

Those who have passed away, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with the ten powers, free from the four fears, who roar the lion's roar in the assembly, who possess the firm strength of non-attachment in their bodies, are also of the nature of abandoning their pleasing bodies. Monks, just as the vessels made by a potter, whether fired or not, all of them decay and eventually come to an end. Monks, likewise, the end of life for all sentient beings, all living beings, and all creatures is death, and they will eventually die; there is no one who is not subject to death after being born. The Blessed One spoke thus, and the Sugata having spoken thus, the Teacher further declared: Alas, all conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, ceasing is bliss. When burning so fiercely, what is there to distinguish, what is there to rejoice in? Those who dwell in darkness, why do they not seek a lamp? After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. The Sutra of Impermanence is complete.
