The Sutra of Impermanence. The Sutra of Impermanence. In Indian language: Anitya Sutra. In Tibetan language: The Sutra of Impermanence. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti, together with a great community of monks. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, these four things are cherished, secluded, precious, pleasing, and delightful to all in the world. What four? Monks, being without illness is cherished, secluded, precious, pleasing, and delightful to all in the world. The end of being without illness is illness. Monks, illness is uncherished, unsecluded, un-precious, displeasing, and undelightful to all in the world. Monks, youth is cherished, secluded, precious, pleasing, and delightful to all in the world. The end of youth is old age. Monks, old age is uncherished, unsecluded, un-precious, displeasing, and undelightful to all in the world. Monks, wealth is cherished, secluded, precious, pleasing, and delightful to all in the world. The end of wealth is decline. Monks, decline is uncherished, unsecluded, un-precious, displeasing, and undelightful to all in the world. Monks, life is cherished, secluded, precious, pleasing, and delightful to all in the world. The end of life is death. Monks, death is uncherished, unsecluded, un-precious, displeasing, and undelightful to all in the world. The Blessed One said thus. Having spoken thus, the Sugata, the Teacher, further said: Without illness, impermanent; youth is not eternal. Wealth is impermanent; life is also not eternal. When beings are threatened by impermanence, how can joy in the qualities of desire arise? The Blessed One said thus.
