The Sutra of Perfect Morality. The Sutra of Perfect Morality. In Sanskrit: Śīla Saṃyukta Mā Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of Perfect Morality. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Bhagavan was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. He was together with a great Sangha of monks, one thousand three hundred and fifty in number. At that time, the Bhagavan said to the monks: Monks, knowledge diminishes, life is cut short, and the formations of life will surely perish. Why do you not strive with diligence and steadfast asceticism? The human body is very difficult to obtain, and having obtained it, and having also found ordination in the Victorious Teaching that has been obtained, it is truly pitiable to be deceived by things that are incompatible with the meaning of liberation. Monks, it is easy to be separated from life and to die, but the deterioration of morality is not so. Why is that? Because being separated from life will only cause the end of this life. But the deterioration and destruction of morality will cause one to be separated from lineage for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, abandoning happiness, and experiencing various downfalls. Therefore, the Teacher praises morality. One who possesses morality will meet and encounter the Buddhas. One who possesses morality is the best of all ornaments. The wealth of morality is fragrance and ointment. One who possesses morality is the place of all joy. One who possesses morality is the water that relieves suffering. One who possesses morality is praised by all the world. Through pure morality, one attains the supreme state. Just as even a fierce snake and a great black dragon do no harm to one who possesses morality, what need is there to mention others? A monk who possesses morality is endowed with light. One who possesses morality becomes famous and obtains happiness. One who possesses morality is the cause of going to the higher realms. By guarding morality, one will attain the cessation of sorrow, Nirvana. Just as one cannot see forms without eyes, similarly, without morality, one cannot see the Dharma. Just as one cannot enter a path without feet, similarly, without morality, one cannot be liberated. Just as a good vase is a container of precious jewels, similarly, morality is the basis for the arising of all dharmas. Just as

A broken vase cannot be a precious container. Likewise, with broken discipline, all Dharma will decline. How can one who initially lacks discipline, Expect to attain Nirvana later? For those with mutilated noses and ears, etc., Mirrors are not needed. Just as the ear has not heard, and the eye has not seen, That person who protects the teachings will go to the heavens. The learned, the possessor of learning, the protector of learning, are in heaven itself. How can one be suitable to associate with women? How can one delight in the king's palace? Where is the essence in a bubble? Where is enjoyment permanent? There is no suitability in women. There is no delight in kingship. There is no essence in bubbles. There is no permanence in enjoyment. Enjoyments are like flowing water. As is the boat, so is the house. As is the flower, so is the form. Life is like a bubble. After the Bhagavan spoke thus, those monks rejoiced, and praised the words spoken by the Bhagavan. The Sutra of Perfect Discipline is complete. The Sutra of Perfect Discipline.
