In Tibetan: The Sutra on Relying on the Noble Virtuous Friend. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the grove of twin Sala trees near the city of Kushinagar, together with a community of monastic disciples. Then, as the Blessed One was about to pass into complete Nirvana, he addressed the monks, saying: Monks, you should train yourselves in this way: Rely on virtuous friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports, and do not rely on evil friends, evil companions, and evil supports. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Then, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, when I am alone in solitude, having entered into meditative absorption, such a thought arises in my mind: Virtuous friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are half of the holy life, while evil friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. The Blessed One said: Ananda, you Do not say that virtuous friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are half of the holy life, while evil friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Why is that? Ananda, virtuous friends, virtuous companions, and virtuous supports are the entirety of the holy life, unmixed, complete, pure, and utterly purified, while evil friends, evil companions, and evil supports are not like that. Why is that? Ananda, relying on me and virtuous friends, sentient beings who are subject to birth will be completely liberated from the law of birth, and sentient beings will age and become ill.
