The Sutra of the Young Example. The Sutra of the Young Example. In Sanskrit: Kumāra dṛṣṭānta sūtraṃ. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Young Example. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was traveling in the land of Kosala. Having arrived at Shravasti, he resided in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. King Prasenajit of Kosala heard that the ascetic Gautama was traveling in the land of Kosala. Having arrived at Shravasti, he resided in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti, and that the ascetic Gautama claimed to have directly realized the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having heard this, King Prasenajit of Kosala went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he rejoiced with the Blessed One, engaged in various kinds of pleasing conversation, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, King Prasenajit of Kosala said to the Blessed One, "Gautama, I have heard that the ascetic Gautama claims to have directly realized the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Gautama, those who declare this, are they not slandering the ascetic Gautama? Are they not speaking falsely? Are they not speaking truthfully as the ascetic Gautama has spoken? Are they not teaching the Dharma? Are they not proclaiming the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma? If someone were to debate with them in accordance with the Dharma, would they not fall into a state of being blamed?" "Great King, those who speak in this way are speaking truthfully. They are not slandering me, nor are they speaking falsely. They are speaking truthfully, and they are proclaiming the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. If someone were to debate with them in accordance with the Dharma, they would not fall into a state of being blamed. Great King, why is that? Because I have directly realized the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Although Gautama said this,

Wise Tama, I do not believe it. What is the reason for that? Alas, Tama, for the time being, the aged and elderly ascetics and Brahmins are these, namely: the Light-possessor Completer, the wandering Black-necked Son, the son of the daughter of Speech-desire, Victorious Army, the Undefeated Hair-knot-wearer, the son of Kasyapa, the Hair-wearer, the Naked One, the son of the Friend, etc., they still cannot manifest the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, let alone you, Wise Tama, who were born not long ago and newly ordained. Great King, these four young ones should not be despised or suppressed. What are the four? Great King, a young Kshatriya, do not despise or suppress him. Great King, a young snake, do not despise or suppress it. Great King, a small fire, do not despise or suppress it. Great King, a young bhikshu, do not despise or suppress him. What is the reason for that? Because a young bhikshu may become an Arhat with great magical powers and great strength. The Blessed One said thus. The Sugata said thus. The Teacher also said: He who possesses an unparalleled Kshatriya lineage, He who possesses a noble and renowned lineage, A wise person considers him young, He should not be despised or suppressed. A wise king of the Kshatriya lineage, Having obtained the kingdom and ruled the government, There are places where punishment and killing occur, Therefore, one should be extremely fearful of him. Thus, protecting one's own life, Observing one's own benefit, One should not despise him, And one should be well guarded against him. Whether in a village or a solitary place, Wherever a snake is seen, A wise person considers it young, He should not be despised or suppressed. Thus, when a snake is traveling, With various kinds of appearances, Once it finds an opportunity, even when young, It can capture many men and women. Therefore, protecting one's own life, Observing one's own benefit, One should not despise it

Do not kill living beings, and also be careful to guard against it well. That which consumes many burning things, that which feeds on offerings and whose path goes before, even if small, do not despise and kill it, and the wise should not suppress it with force. Approaching it, that which feeds on offerings, will grow from small to large. The burning flames quickly burn down villages and cities. Therefore, those who protect their own lives, do not despise and kill it, and carefully attend to their own interests, and also be careful to guard against it well. That fire which feeds on offerings and whose path goes before, burns down dense forests, and as days and nights pass, in some places leaves will grow. Whoever finds a monk who observes moral discipline and destroys him, that person will not have sons and grandsons, nor will he have property, he will not grow tall like a palm tree, and he will also be separated from his family. Therefore, those who protect their own lives, do not despise and kill it. Carefully attend to your own interests, and also be careful to guard against it well. Those who possess the auspicious marks of a royal lineage, like fire crawling on the chest, similarly, a monk who observes moral discipline, the wise should not suppress with force. Therefore, those who protect their own lives, do not despise and kill it. Carefully attend to your own interests, and you should carefully stay away from it. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala, praised and rejoiced in the words spoken by the Blessed One, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. The Sutra of the Simile of the Youth is complete. The Sutra of the Simile of the Youth.
