The Great Sutra Called the Supreme Banner The Great Sutra Called the Supreme Banner In Sanskrit: DHAZA AGRANAMA MAHA SUTRAM. In Tibetan: The Great Sutra Called the Supreme Banner. Homage to the Three Jewels! Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, if you are dwelling in a secluded place, or at the foot of a tree, or in an empty house, and fear, dread, or hair-raising arises, then at that time you should thus recollect the Blessed One: 'The Blessed One is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed Charioteer of beings to be tamed, the Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' At that time, if you recollect me, then whatever fear, dread, or hair-raising arises will disappear. Monks, in the past, when the gods and the asuras were about to engage in battle, Indra, the lord of the gods, said to the gods of the Thirty-Three: 'Friends, if you are engaged in battle between the gods and the asuras, and fear, dread, or hair-raising arises, then at that time you should recollect my supreme banner, which is victorious in every way.' At that time, if you recollect my supreme banner, which is victorious in every way, then whatever fear, dread, or hair-raising arises will disappear. Monks, similarly, if you are also dwelling in a secluded place, or at the foot of a tree, or in an empty house, and fear, dread, or hair-raising arises, then at that time you should thus recollect the Blessed One: 'The Blessed One is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone

The departed, the knower of the world, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, is the Buddha, the Blessed One. You should truly remember me from this perspective. Monks, at that time, if you truly remember me from this perspective, whatever fear, dread, or hair-raising experience that may arise will disappear. Monks, the lord of the gods, Indra, still possesses attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and has not fully escaped from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil. Therefore, he has fear, he has dread, he has panic, he has flight. He may sometimes experience fear, sometimes dread, sometimes panic, sometimes flight. Even the gods of the Thirty-Three believe that the words of the lord of the gods, Indra, should be listened to with faith and that they should act according to his words. Monks, I am the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, free from attachment, free from hatred, free from ignorance, completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil. There is no fear, no dread, no panic, no flight. Therefore, monks, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, free from attachment, free from hatred, free from ignorance, completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil, has no fear, no dread, no panic, no flight. My words should be listened to, acted upon as instructed, and followed.

The place of action is called Shin. The Blessed One spoke thus, and after the Sugata spoke thus, the Teacher further spoke thus: In solitary places, under trees, and in empty houses, O world's protector, perfect Buddha, the guide, remember them, O monks. If you cannot remember the guide, the world's protector, the perfect Buddha, then remember the Dharma, the best of those free from desire. If you cannot remember the Dharma, the best of those free from desire, then remember the Sangha, the supreme field of merit. Having thus remembered the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, O monks, fear, apprehension, and trembling will cease to exist. Many people, frightened by fear, go to mountains and forests, and to trees offered in joy, seeking refuge. That is not the main refuge, and that is not the supreme refuge; relying on those refuges, one will not be liberated from all suffering. Those who have gone for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha will, with wisdom, truly see suffering, the arising of all suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the eightfold noble path that leads to peace and nirvana. That is the chief of refuges, and that is the supreme refuge; having relied on those refuges, one will be liberated from all suffering. After the Blessed One spoke thus, those monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. Thus concludes the Great Banner Sutra. Translated, reviewed, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Jinamitra, Prajñavarma, and the revising translator, the monk Yeshede, and others.
