The Sutra of the Three Dharmas The Sutra of the Three Dharmas In Sanskrit: Tridharmaka nāma sūtra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Three Dharmas. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika, together with a great assembly of monks. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, some foolish people here possess three non-dharmas, and do not give alms, do not perform meritorious deeds, nor do they properly take and abide in the precepts. What are the three? They are: attachment, miserliness, and heedlessness. Monks, some foolish people here, possessing these three non-dharmas, do not give alms, do not perform meritorious deeds, and do not properly take and abide in the precepts. When their bodies are destroyed and they die, they will be reborn in the lower realms, the evil destinies, the hells of sentient beings. Monks, noble beings who possess three noble dharmas give alms, perform meritorious deeds, and properly take and abide in the precepts. What are the three? They are: non-attachment, non-miserliness, and mindfulness. Monks, noble beings who possess these three noble dharmas give alms, perform meritorious deeds, and properly take and abide in the precepts. When their bodies are destroyed and they die, they will be reborn in the happy realms, the heavens of the world of gods. The Blessed One thus spoke. After the Sugata had spoken thus, the Teacher further declared: Because of miserliness and heedlessness, alms are not given. Therefore, the wise who desire merit should give alms. The fear of the miserly is hunger and thirst. If one does not give here out of fear, that itself is the fear of humans. If, due to the power of miserliness, one does not give what one has, that is fear. In this world and the next, one will be treated like a child. Those who

Even having abandoned stinginess, if one gives alms in due time, then even if one dies, it is not truly death, like a guest with abundant food. Those things that are very difficult to give away, whether giving little or much, giving away those difficult things to give is doing difficult deeds. Non-saints cannot understand, saints do not transgress the Dharma. Therefore, saints are not non-saints. From here, after dying, non-saints go to hell, while saints go to higher realms. There is no refuge for those tormented by old age, and with a short lifespan, the time of taking life is also near. Those who see the fear of death should engage in virtuous deeds and cultivate happiness. Abandoning women, living here by engaging in sexual conduct, even giving a small amount with difficulty, it is not worth one-sixteenth of performing hundreds of thousands of great sacrifices. Why is it that vast and extensive sacrifices do not go on the path of corresponding sacrifices? Just as even the great sacrifices of thousands cannot amount to one-sixteenth of it. Because here, some kill and imprison children, take others' property that is not given, and ultimately go to ruin. With tearful faces and accompanied by punishment, such offerings do not go on the path of corresponding sacrifices. Thus, vast and extensive sacrifices do not go on the path of corresponding sacrifices. Thus, even the great sacrifices of thousands cannot amount to one-sixteenth of it. Those who are not deceitful or cunning, who obtain wealth according to the Dharma and give it away, by giving away those difficult things to give, they will go to the heavenly realms by their own merit. After the Blessed One spoke thus, those monks rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. End of the Sutra Called "The Three Dharmas". Translated by the Indian Abbot Jinamitra and the reviser-translator Pandit Devacandra, and revised and finalized by the translator Paltsog.
