The Mahayana Sutra called "Admonishing the King". The Mahayana Sutra called "Admonishing the King". In Indian language: Rāja deśa nāma mahāyāna sūtra. In Tibetan: The Mahayana Sutra called "Admonishing the King". Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was teaching the Dharma to his retinue in the great city of Varanasi. Seeing that the time was ripe for subduing King Carja of Badsala, he went with his retinue to the region of Badsala. King Carja of Badsala, in order to destroy the great city called Golden City, set out with four armies and encountered the Buddha. King Carja was enraged and said, "Having encountered such an inauspicious thing, one should be killed." Then he took an arrow, an axe, and a fish-tail knife and shot them at the Blessed One. Then, the arrow circled in the sky and made this sound: "Hatred creates suffering. Here also there is killing, fighting, and strife. In the future, there will be the suffering of hell. Therefore, abandon hatred, fighting, and strife." When King Carja heard these words, he developed faith in the Blessed One, prostrated, and sat to one side. The Blessed One said, "Great King, fighting leads to killing in this life and rebirth in the lower realms in the next. Why do you always engage in fighting?" The king replied, "Gautama, I have never been defeated in battle with anyone. I am fond of armies and fighting." The Blessed One said, "Great King, this enemy is a small enemy. Great King, there is a greater enemy lurking." The king replied, "Who is that enemy?" The Blessed One said, "There is a great enemy called the affliction of self-grasping." The king replied, "Please tell me, what is that enemy like?" The Blessed One said, "The great enemy of conceptual self-grasping, though like an illusion without substance, has existed in my mind since beginningless time, stealing my wish-fulfilling jewel-like Dharmakaya, hiding in the thicket of names, and still binding me, causing me to wander in samsara.

Do not indulge in it! The worldly enemy only kills and plunders wealth, Enduring that also perfects the accumulation of merit. This enemy severs the very life of peace and liberation, Clinging to it binds merit in the mire of samsara. The king asked: How should one fight against that great enemy? The Blessed One replied: The equipment for fighting the enemy of conceptual thought is: Build a fortress of generosity and discipline with faith, Make virtue the army, wear the armor of patience, Hold the whip of diligence, draw the bow of meditative concentration, Kill self-grasping with the arrow of selflessness and emptiness. The king asked: Please explain what is meant by selflessness. The Blessed One replied: King, listen to the doctrine of the selflessness of persons, A person is a continuum of the five aggregates, why is that? Because it arises from karma and afflictions, The result flows out as the aggregates, that is its "self." "Self" is clinging to each sentient being's body, Clinging to "I" and "mine," thus generating attachment. "I" fears sickness, death, hunger, and cold, Happy when praised, unhappy when criticized. The five non-Buddhist teachers cling to this. "I" or "mine" does not exist, It is a delusion arising from observing the aggregates. Name is not "self," it is merely a designation, The body is not "self," it is merely flesh, bones, etc., The aggregation of the great elements is like an external wall. Mind is also not "self," because it has no substance. King, listen to the doctrine of the selflessness of phenomena, Phenomena are all things such as form, There is no maker, yet one clings to its characteristics. These are all connected with false discriminations and clinging to signs, They are views that do not accord with reality, because they do not exist. Why is that? Because in these internal and external phenomena, One does not abandon these things to seek emptiness, But in appearance itself is emptiness. Destruction, disintegration, and impermanence are merely called "empty." How is it shown that appearance has no inherent nature? Because it does not abide in the three—existence, non-existence, or the middle, Samsara and nirvana, which are called "existent," The nature of samsara is the two—object and mind, Thus, examine the object, it has no substance: The self-appearing dust is broken down, and the dust is also broken down into smaller parts, there is no substance. All appearances are mind, like a dream. Mind also lacks color, shape, etc. Therefore, samsara is empty and selfless. Without samsara, there is also no nirvana. Because existence is not established, therefore non-existence is also not established. Because there are no two extremes, therefore there is also no middle.

It is like that. If the king meditates on selflessness, the cycle of ego-clinging will be cut off from the root. The king reported: "In the past, I regarded non-enemies as enemies and was tormented by ego-clinging and hatred. Now I have recognized the true enemy, and in order to fight that enemy, I am happy to practice selflessness." The Blessed One said: "Great King, well done! You have defeated the enemy of ego-clinging." After the Blessed One said this, King Badsala, along with others like him, rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. The Mahayana Sutra entitled "Advice to King Badsala, the Maker of Appearances" is complete. Translated, edited, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Danashila and the monk Yeshe De. Mahayana Sutra entitled "Advice to the King".
