The Sutra Called "The First Division of Dependent Arising and the Explanation of Distinctions". The Sutra Called "The First Division of Dependent Arising and the Explanation of Distinctions". In Indian language: Pratītyasamutpādādica vibhaṅga ni śa nāma sūtra. In Tibetan language: The Sutra Called "The First Division of Dependent Arising and the Explanation of Distinctions". Homage to the Three Jewels! Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapindika's Garden. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, I will show you the first division of dependent arising and the explanation of distinctions. Listen well, pay close attention, and keep it in mind, and I will explain it." What is the first division of dependent arising? It is like this: When this exists, that arises; with the arising of this, that arises. That is to say, ignorance is the condition for formations; formations are the condition for consciousness; consciousness is the condition for name and form; name and form are the condition for the six sense sources; the six sense sources are the condition for contact; contact is the condition for feeling; feeling is the condition for craving; craving is the condition for grasping; grasping is the condition for becoming; becoming is the condition for birth; birth is the condition for aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation. Thus, this great mass of suffering arises. This is called the first division of dependent arising. What is the explanation of the distinctions of dependent arising? "Ignorance is the condition for formations"—what is ignorance? That which does not know the former limit, does not know the latter limit, does not know the former and latter limits, does not know the internal, does not know the external, does not know the internal and external, does not know karma, does not know ripening, does not know karma and ripening, does not know the Buddha, does not know the Dharma, does not know the Sangha, does not know suffering, does not know the origin, does not know cessation, and does not know the path.

What is the craving called "craving"? There are three types of craving: craving for desire, craving for form, and craving for formlessness. Conditioned by craving is grasping. What is the grasping called "grasping"? There are four types of grasping: grasping for desire, grasping for views, grasping for ethics and asceticism, and grasping for self-assertion. Conditioned by grasping is existence. What is the existence called "existence"? There are three types of existence: existence in the desire realm, existence in the form realm, and existence in the formless realm. Conditioned by existence is birth. What is the birth called "birth"? Among various sentient beings, in various classes of sentient beings, whatever birth, extreme birth, transference, manifestation, appearance, obtaining of individual aggregates, obtaining of individual elements, obtaining of individual sense bases, the manifestation of aggregates being accomplished, the arising of the life force, this is called birth. Conditioned by birth is aging and death. What is the aging called "aging"? Whatever graying of hair, wrinkling of skin, decrepitude, withering, bending like an ox drinking water, the body being covered with black spots, drooling, heavy breathing, the body leaning forward, relying on a cane, being foolish and dull, weakness, decline, complete decline, decay of the faculties, decay of activities, becoming extremely decayed, this is called aging. What is death? Whatever the transference of various sentient beings from various classes of sentient beings, the very transference, destruction, internal decay, decay of life, disappearance of warmth, cessation of the life force, abandonment of the aggregates, dying, demise, this is called death. Combining this death with the previous aging, it is called aging and death. This is the differentiation of dependent origination. Monks, I will explain to you the beginning and the differentiation of dependent origination. That which I have said is for this reason. The beginning and the differentiation of dependent origination.
