The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Pure Living on Food" The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Pure Living on Food" In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Pure Living on Food." Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus I have heard, once, the Blessed One was in the Grove of Light, together with a great Sangha of monks, one hundred thirteen hundred thousand, and also with other monk fathers, monk mothers, lay fathers, lay mothers, gods, nagas, the eight classes, and many Bodhisattvas. Then, the great Maudgalyayana rose from his seat, prostrated to the Blessed One, and said this: Blessed One, I once went to the city for alms, and on the way, I saw hundreds of thousands of people. Their heads were as big as mountains, their bellies were like Mount Sumeru, and their necks were as thin as needles. When they moved and excreted, there was a sound like five hundred chariots moving violently, and also an unbearable smoke of decay emanated from them. What is this thing? From where did it come? Please, Blessed One, explain. Then the Blessed One said: Maudgalyayana's son, those are hungry ghosts. In the past, they destroyed stupas and offerings, so such sins have ripened. Another case is that they ate the offerings of others without sharing, which is the ripening of that sin. Do not give without sharing the remaining food of the offerings. The patron should ask to distribute the remaining food to the Sangha and ask for forgiveness. The Sangha should give the shared food. If it is not given, the Sangha will also fall. Then, Maudgalyayana's son said: What the Blessed One said is true. Whichever patron, for the sake of accumulating offerings and wealth according to the Dharma, those who share food will have a pure life of food. The Blessed One said: Those who do not share food will not have food. Thus, sharing food one day

If it can be done, merit and food will increase in sixty thousand suns. If it is not done in that way, one will become a hungry ghost for sixty thousand suns. Why is that? Because that kind of giving is very heavy. It is easier to eat iron pills. The food of a faithful patron is very difficult to digest, and one will suffer for a very long time, becoming the object of hungry ghosts for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes. Be very careful with the food of merit. If it is carried in a coarse cloth bag or sleeve, one will fall into hell for five hundred lifetimes, and a red iron ball will pass through the left armpit and out the right armpit. Do not disrespect leftovers. Even if you take something as small as a mustard seed when you are young, it will become as big as an iron wheel. Even a layperson should not contaminate the prepared food of merit from the beginning by tasting it. If you prepare it after tasting it, everything prepared will be contaminated by leftovers. Doing it becomes meaningless. It is better not to do it. Why is that? Because all the gods will be displeased. All the relatives will be unhappy. If someone has tasted it, they will become a hungry ghost for fifty thousand lifetimes. They will also experience various unbearable sufferings. If someone wants merit in the future, they should properly separate the food of merit with clean things, prepare it with great respect, wash their hands very cleanly, prepare the vegetables and so on lukewarm, cover them very well, and make offerings with respect, and do not taste those things beforehand. Then it will become merit, and all the gods will be pleased. All the relatives will also be pleased. All the gods and so on will protect and bless, and it is true to say. The ripening of merit is like an echo and an image. The reason for becoming a hungry ghost in that way is initially due to humans. Initially, it is because one touches the clean food of the Sangha with unclean hands, or because one searches through the clean food of the Sangha with one's own unclean hands, or because one mixes unclean food with clean food and gives it to the Sangha, and therefore one becomes a hungry ghost for five hundred lifetimes.

Falling into it, if one always eats unclean things, and eats unclean things in the garbage dump, the guardian of the garbage dump will strike with an iron bar, making those hungry ghosts uneasy in the garbage dump. They will eat human pus, blood, phlegm, snot, and unclean dirty things like foot-washing water, guarding unclean things, and eating the unclean blood that flows from women after childbirth. Then, for five hundred thousand lifetimes, they will be reborn as dogs, pigs, maggots, and other bodies, always smelling and eating dirty and unclean things. Such suffering will be experienced for countless kalpas, with no time for liberation. It is difficult to obtain liberation. The extremely inexhaustible suffering is also beyond words. If a hand touches a male organ, or a hand touches a female organ, or an unclean hand touches the clean food of the Sangha, or unclean things are put into the food of the Sangha, or the Sangha is made to eat unclean food, then the ripening of such sins is that all are afflicted by epidemics of eye disease, and it is not recognized as sin. From now on, making the food of the Sangha clean, holding the food container of the Sangha with clean hands, washing rice with clean hands, and giving clean food as alms will result in immeasurable merit. From now on, let this be widely known, and remember it with a keen mind. The Sutra of Pure Living is complete. The Great Vehicle Sutra called "Pure Living of Food".
