The Noble Great Vehicle Sutra Called "Living by the City". The Noble Great Vehicle Sutra Called "Living by the City". In Indian language: Ārya Nāgara Avalambikā Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Noble Great Vehicle Sutra Called "Living by the City". Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the garden of Anathapindika, revered, respected, honored, and praised by gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Indra, Brahma, the world protectors, kings, ministers, Bodhisattvas, monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. He dwelt there like a lotus unstained by water. Then, at that time, King Prasenajit, in order to make offerings to the Tathagata, on the fifteenth day of the full moon in the last month of autumn, filled a thousand large copper vessels with ghee and lit ghee lamps, the light of which illuminated an area of four yojanas all around. Then, at that time, in the great city of Shravasti, there lived a woman named Nandā, who lived by the city. She bought ghee mixed with mustard seeds and sustained herself for four days, becoming weak. Then, she took the ghee and went to the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, lit a ghee lamp in the corridor, and made this aspiration: "Blessed One, may I, through this root of virtue, in the future, just like the present Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, also become a teacher in the future, teach the Dharma, and gather the Sangha." She also made this aspiration: "If I am to become a Buddha in the future, may this lamp burn for me until the future." Having said this, she lit the ghee lamp and went to the city. The light of that lamp illuminated the entire Jambudvipa until dawn.

That lamp did not go out. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana tried to extinguish the lamp with the edge of his Dharma robe, but he could not extinguish it. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana tried to extinguish it with scattered winds, but he could not extinguish it. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana, residing in the Brahma world, blessed this three-thousand world to send down a continuous rain as thick as a chariot axle, and even when it was sent upon that lamp, he could not extinguish it. Then, the Bhagavan said: Maudgalyayana, let it go! This lamp is lit with the mind of Bodhi, and the mind of Bodhi cannot be suppressed by the Shravakas. Why is that? Because the mind of omniscience itself cannot be suppressed by all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Then, after a while, that woman came out of the city after the sun had risen. When she saw that the lamp was blazing brightly, she was filled with great joy. Then, the Bhagavan smiled at that time. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans: when the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, smile, various colors of light radiate from the face of the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, such as blue, yellow, red, white, madder, crystal, and silver. These lights illuminate the boundless and limitless realms of the world, reaching up to the Brahma world, even suppressing the light of the moon and the sun, and then returning, circumambulating the Bhagavan three times, and finally disappearing into the crown of the Bhagavan's head. Then, those rays of light circumambulated the Bhagavan three times and disappeared into the crown of the Bhagavan's head. Then, the venerable Ananda asked the Bhagavan in verse: Supreme King, Guide, Best of Beings, You do not smile without a reason, What cause makes your face smile? Speak to me with compassion for the benefit of the world. The Bhagavan said: Ananda, this city lives by

Thereafter, for twenty-eight kalpas, he will not fall into evil destinies, will constantly experience the perfections of gods and humans, and will become a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha named 'Universally Illuminating.' Then, the Bhagavan spoke these verses at that time: To worship the possessor of ten powers, King Light Victory lit a thousand great copper lamps, illuminating everywhere for four yojanas. By lighting with sesame oil, beans, and mustard seeds provided by the city's sustenance, illuminating Jambudvipa, that is the power of Bodhicitta. Maudgalyayana, desiring to extinguish the lamp, performed great miracles, sending forth scattered winds, but could not extinguish it. Even pouring down a stream of water as thick as a chariot axle from the Brahma world could not extinguish it; the lamp shone like the sun's light. He partook of food for four days and came to the Joyful Grove, with a joyful mind prostrated at the feet of the Sugata, and stood with folded hands. The Incomparable One smiled, and Ananda was also exceedingly joyful, asking: What is the fruit of this infinitely glorious smile? This joyful one will become a Buddha in twenty-eight kalpas, named 'Self-Arisen Universally Illuminating,' whose light will illuminate the four great thousand worlds. In the future, he will make offerings to billions of Tathagatas, he will become a universal Chakravartin king, revered by all kings. Narrating the story of the Buddha's enlightenment, making the faithful exceedingly joyful, and upon hearing it, the wise also rejoice greatly in their hearts. Thus, the Victorious One is inconceivable, and the Dharma of the Ten Powers is also immeasurable; if joy is generated, its unequaled and immeasurable result will occur. After the Bhagavan spoke thus, the venerable Ananda, and that city provider, and those Bodhisattvas, and those monks, and the gods, humans, asuras, gandharvas, and the world with all its beings rejoiced, and praised what the Bhagavan had said. The Mahayana Sutra 'Arya Sustenance of the City' is complete. Translated by the Indian Abbot Jñana Garbha and the translator Bande Klu'i Wangpo. And by the Indian Abbot Vidyakara Simha.
