Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, the wise give gifts in thirty-seven ways. What are the thirty-seven? In order to completely abandon stinginess, one gives with faith. One gives at the right time. One gives with the three pure objects allowed by the Tathāgata. In order to abandon all faults of mental disturbance, one gives with respect and reverence. In order to extract the essence from this meaningless body, one gives from one's own hand. If one gives gifts that do not harm others, one will obtain a great ripening result. If one gives gifts of excellent color, one will obtain a ripening result of beautiful color. If one gives gifts of excellent fragrance, one will obtain a ripening result of the fragrance of fame. The result of maturation is that one will attain a very high caste. If one gives vehicles as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the four miraculous feet. If one gives medicine as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the cessation of old age and death, and the extinction of suffering and all afflictions, nirvana. If one gives the Dharma as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the remembrance of past lives. If one gives flowers as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the flowers of the limbs of enlightenment. If one gives garlands as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the complete purification of the stains of desire, hatred, and ignorance. If one gives incense as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the complete absence of all the foul odors of afflictions. If one gives umbrellas as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the power of dominion over the Dharma. If one gives bells as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain pleasant sounds. If one gives cymbals as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain sounds like the voice of Brahma. If one gives lamps as alms, the result of maturation is that one will attain the unobstructed and completely pure divine eye. If one gives silk as alms, the result of maturation is that among gods and humans, one will attain being bound by the silk of liberation. If one offers delicious butter or fragrant perfume to a Tathagata's stupa or a Tathagata's image, or offers bathing water with incense, the result of maturation is that one will attain the thirty-two marks of a great being and the eighty minor marks of excellence. If one gives bathing equipment as alms, the result of maturation is that in all lifetimes one will have few illnesses, be born into a noble family, and be beautiful in every way. If one gives the five essences as alms, the result of maturation is that in all lifetimes one will attain great power, great joy, and uncontrollable strength. If one gives alms while abiding in loving-kindness, the result of maturation is that one will attain the absence of harmful intent. If one gives alms while abiding in compassion, the result of maturation is that one will attain the absence of harm. If one gives alms while abiding in joy, the result of maturation is that one will attain the giving of fearlessness.

will be obtained. If one dwells in equanimity and gives alms, one will excellently obtain the abandonment of unpleasant ripening. If one gives various kinds of alms, one will excellently obtain various kinds of enjoyment as ripening. If one dwells without expecting a return and gives alms, one will excellently obtain the ripening of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Monks, the wise should give these thirty-seven kinds of alms. After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said.
