Chapter Eight: The Realm of Self-Cognizance. Chapter Eight: The Realm of Self-Cognizance. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajragarbha, gazing in the ten directions, illuminated all realms of the world with the rays of the jewel on his crown, as well as the realms of dominion, and also illuminated the sons of the Buddhas residing in the palace of the essence of precious jewels. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the one who teaches the establishment of reality as it is, spoke, saying: "The one who teaches the establishment of reality as it is, on the face of the snowy mountains, there is a type of deer called 'Killer of all Deer,' which deceives many deer with hundreds of thousands of tricks, and kills and devours the deer that have fallen into its trap. Even when it sees a doe with its young, it calls out in the voice of the young. Even when it sees a horned deer, it transforms itself to resemble those horns and goes to it. Then, when they trust it, and it knows that they have trusted it, it slaughters and devours them. Even when it sees horns, it shows itself in the form of horns, causing them to drop their guard, and slaughters and devours them as it pleases. Just as that cruel deer kills deer in various ways, so too, the alaya-vijñana is strongly attached to those who assert 'self' among the opponents of other paths, abiding in the nature of 'I,' bound by those attachments, conceiving of 'self' with such and such a nature, fully understanding even down to the finest particles. For those who are attached to 'self,' abiding in that attachment to 'self,' it is not merely another consciousness, until those who understand 'self' see that consciousness arises from the conjunction of mind, sense organs, and objects, and not from the cause of the aggregation of 'I,' mind, sense organs, and objects. For example, when a flower and cloth meet, they become differentiated by fragrance, but when they do not meet, the fragrance is not distinct. Likewise, if that object is not those other than mind, mental factors, consciousness, and vijñana, then it is like a vessel and a container, or like fire and a lamp and pottery, or like a mirage and an isaka."

There is no other son. From causes and conditions, the aggregates arising from mind and from mind appear very much, being selfless and subtle, impossible to generate, indivisible, pure, and luminous from the beginning. Except for the realm of experience that each noble one self-realizes, they are not perceived by those who think they can understand. This is like a fierce trap for wild animals, causing views of existence and non-existence, oneness and multiplicity, all and not all, for the beings of the world. For those who have not comprehended the mere nature of consciousness, they also fall into clinging to the notion of self and what belongs to self. Because of not knowing, with the thought of wanting to comprehend the Dharma, they ride the wheel of cyclic existence, running around from here and there. Separated from virtuous friends, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas, their minds are even more distant than being far from their own side. Unable to attain the eightfold noble path, unable to enter even one of the three vehicles, after holding onto appearances, without generating a return, they do not see the noble truths. Therefore, those who have the karma of the dense wheel do not even hear the word 'dense' or the sound of 'dense'. This teaching, which accurately establishes and proclaims the truth, is the complete purification of the views of yogis. You and other Bodhisattvas should also strive in this. You should also explain to the yogis the way to enter the dense Buddha-field. The eighth chapter, called "The Realm of One's Own Consciousness," is completed. Eighth Chapter: The Chapter Called "The Realm of One's Own Consciousness."
