The Sutra of the Dharma Category Called the Noble Eight Wheels. The Sutra of the Dharma Category Called the Noble Eight Wheels. In Sanskrit: Ārya Maṇḍala Aṣṭa Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Great Vehicle of the Dharma Category Called the Noble Eight Wheels. Thus I have heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍada's Park, together with a great Saṅgha of monks and a great Saṅgha of Bodhisattvas. He was surrounded by many beings, including gods, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, and he was teaching the Dharma while looking ahead. At that time, a Bodhisattva named Lion King Adornment, who had gathered in that assembly, saw that great wheel of attendants and was amazed. He rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with his palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One and said to him: "Blessed One, I have seen hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddhas appear, but none of their circles of attendants have been like that of the Blessed One. Blessed One, please answer my request for this teaching, so that other Bodhisattvas may also rejoice when they hear it." Then, the Blessed One, in order to truly uplift the assembly that was complete in every way, spoke to the Bodhisattva Lion King Adornment, saying: "Son of good family, listen, and I will explain the answer to your question, the Dharma category called the Eight Wheels, which I constantly attended to and meditated on many times when I was previously in the state of an ordinary being. Son of good family, in the past, there lived a Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha named Inconceivable Light, who resided, lived, and taught the Dharma. At that time, there was a householder named Fierce Giver

Someone was extremely unbelieving and possessed five unpleasant qualities, turning their back on the Buddhist monastic discipline. A monk named Vairocanavijaya, out of compassion for that householder, went to that householder's home again and again without ceasing. After a while, due to circumstances, that householder developed a mind of attachment towards that monk. After a while, that householder inquired about the fruits of good deeds. Then, that monk, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, for compassion towards the world, and for the sake of the majority of beings, gods and humans, for benefit and happiness, taught that householder the category of teachings called the "Eight Mandalas." Householder, what is the category of teachings called the "Eight Mandalas"? It is to give all happiness. By that, one will obtain a perfect retinue, and wherever one is born, one will not be separated from beings who possess Dharma. A large retinue will make the body perfect, and one will obtain a beautiful form. One will obtain perfect resources, and without having to search, resources will come. The body will be strong and stable, and one will obtain a perfect body, and even mountains and walls will not obstruct one. One will obtain these four perfections. Then, that householder became happy, satisfied, and joyful, and he kissed the feet of that monk and said: Noble one, please show the eight mandalas, may they become manifest to me. Then, the monk Vairocanavijaya, knowing the thoughts of that householder, explained it thoroughly and correctly: Son of good family, listen, and I will explain it. Therefore, with newly mixed heavy substances, make a square mandala. In common with all sentient beings, whatever Buddhas of the past, and whatever will come in the future and appear in the present, Bodhisattvas, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas, whatever there are, dedicate them entirely to them. Then, around the mandala, make the mandalas of the retinue, the Lord of the World and Loving-kindness, and the Sage, the Excellent One, and Space, and all.

To the wise and virtuous, the lord of secrets, the manifestation of Manjushri, the one who dispels all obscurations, and the essence of the earth, for their sake, make the eight mandalas. This householder is a category of dharma called the eight mandalas. I have directly heard this from the Bhagavan Tathagata Amitabha. Householder, listen again! Whoever desires to obtain good retinue, should draw these eight mandalas. If one desires the position of Indra, the lord of the Brahma world, the kingship of gods and humans, various beautiful forms with wisdom, one should always make these eight supreme mandalas. What do you think of the array of the Lion King? At that time, if you think that the monk named Victorious Arising is someone else, you should not think like that. This Manjushri who has become a youth, at that time, at that moment, became the monk named Victorious Arising. At the time of the Lion King's array, at that time, at that moment, if you doubt or have doubts that the householder named Fierce Giver is someone else, you should not think like that. I myself, at that time, at that moment, became the householder named Fierce Giver. Until I have perfected the six perfections, and until I have attained Buddhahood, in those hundreds of millions of lifetimes, I have always practiced this Dharma, meditated on it, and increased it greatly. Son of lineage, what is the cause for my retinue's mandala array to be like this? That is the cause, that is the condition. After the Bhagavan had spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Lion King Array, and those monks, and those Bodhisattvas, and that retinue endowed with all, the world with gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised the words of the Bhagavan. The Mahayana Sutra, the category of dharma called "The Noble Eight Mandalas," is complete. Indian Abbot Jinamitra and Translator Bande Yeshe of Zhuchen.
