Chapter Eight: Taking to the Temple Chapter Eight: Taking to the Temple Monks, in this way, on the night when the Bodhisattva was born, in the families of the Kshatriyas, Brahmins, and householders, like great Sala trees, twenty thousand daughters were born. All of them were offered by their parents for the purpose of honoring and venerating the Bodhisattva. King Suddhodana also offered twenty thousand daughters for the purpose of honoring and venerating the Bodhisattva. Friends, ministers, relatives, and in-laws also offered twenty thousand daughters for the purpose of honoring and venerating the Bodhisattva. The retinues of the ministers also offered twenty thousand daughters for the purpose of honoring and venerating the Bodhisattva. Monks, at that time, the elders of the Shakyas gathered and said to King Suddhodana: "O God, please be aware that this youth should be honored in the temple." The king said: "It is good to honor the youth in this way, so decorate the city. Adorn the streets, crossroads, three-way intersections, and markets beautifully. Remove the inauspicious hunchbacks, blind, deaf, mute, ugly, and those with incomplete faculties. Also gather the auspicious ones. Beat the drum of merit. Ring the auspicious bell. Adorn the sacred gate of the city with good decorations. Play and strike the most pleasing musical instruments, cymbals, and clappers. Summon all the kings of the realms. Gather merchants, householders, ministers, gatekeepers, and the people of the retinue. Prepare the chariots for the daughters. Arrange full vases. Gather the reciting Brahmins. Decorate the temples very splendidly." Monks, then, as the king had commanded, everything was prepared. Then King Suddhodana went to his own house and summoned Mahaprajapati Gautami, the great mother of the masses, and said:

Place the youth in the temple and adorn him well with ornaments. The great Gautami, the lord of the world, heard this and replied, "Very well," and adorned the youth. Then, when the youth was adorned, he smiled and, without a frown, said to his aunt with very pleasing words, "Mother, where will you place me?" She replied, "Child, place him in the temple." Then, the youth smiled and laughed, and said to his aunt in verse: When I was born, this three-thousand world trembled. Indra, Brahma, Asuras, great belly-goers, and the sun and moon, as well as Vaishravana and I, Touch the two feet with the crown of our heads to prostrate. Where will my mother place me today? Which other god is more exalted than me? I am superior to all the gods, the god of gods. There is no god like me, and certainly none above me. However, I exist merely to conform to the world. If beings see my miraculous transformations, they will rejoice and give great offerings and respect. The gods and humans will know that this is the god of gods. Monks, in this way, the chariot of the youth was displayed in the city, adorned with ornaments, and all auspicious things were displayed. King Śuddhodana took the youth into his lap, surrounded by Brahmins, townspeople, merchants, householders, ministers, regional kings, gatekeepers, attendants, friends, and relatives. In the streets, crossroads, intersections, and markets adorned with countless treasures, they fumigated with fragrant incense, scattered flowers, and the procession of horses, elephants, chariots, and foot soldiers grew large. Umbrellas, banners, and flags were raised, and the sounds of various musical instruments were played as they proceeded. At that time, hundreds of thousands of gods drew the chariot of the Bodhisattva, and hundreds of thousands of billions of daughters of the gods rained down flowers from the center of the sky, making the sound of musical instruments. Monks, in this way, King Śuddhodana proceeded with great royal splendor, great royal perfection, and great royal blessings.

The youth was taken to the temple. Then, the Bodhisattva placed the sole of his right foot in that temple. After that, those inanimate forms of gods, such as: Gulang, the Emaciated One, the Evil Body, the Moon, the Sun, Vaishravana's son, Indra, Brahma, the guardians of the world, and all other forms, rose from their respective places and paid homage to the Bodhisattva's feet. At that time, hundreds of thousands of gods and humans uttered sounds like "Alas, Alala!", and many sounds of clamor and noise. That great and sacred city of Kapilavastu (ser skya'i gnas) also shook in six ways. Showers of divine flowers visibly fell. Hundreds of thousands of divine musical instruments also produced sounds without being played. All the forms of whatever gods there were, manifested their respective forms and spoke these verses: The king of mountains, the supreme mountain, Mount Meru, never pays homage to mustard seeds. The ocean, the abode of the dragon king, never pays homage to the water in a cow's hoofprint. The sun and moon, the luminaries, do not pay homage to the light of a firefly. Gods with merit, wisdom, good lineage, and virtues do not pay homage to anything. Mustard seeds, water in a cow's hoofprint, and fireflies are like this. In this triple thousand world, whatever god or human there may be, pride exists. Mount Meru, the ocean, the sun and moon are like this self-born sacred world. Paying homage to it, the world attains higher realms and Nirvana. When the Bodhisattva's entry into the temple was shown, thirty-two hundred thousand sons of gods generated the mind of Bodhi for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Monks, that is the reason and cause for the Bodhisattva being placed in neutrality when he was taken to the temple. The chapter of being taken to the temple, the eighth chapter. Eighth, The chapter of being taken to the temple.
