At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Dharma monastery in the land of Magadha, together with a vast assembly of monks and an immeasurable, countless gathering of Bodhisattvas who had assembled from limitless Buddhafields. At that time, in that assembly, a Bodhisattva named Sunlight Utterly Shining arose from his seat and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, I have a request to make to the Tathagata. Blessed One, I beseech you to grant me the opportunity to speak." The Blessed One replied, "Ask whatever you wish, and I shall explain." Then, the Bodhisattva Sunlight Utterly Shining said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means train in the Perfection of Wisdom?" The Blessed One replied, "Son of good family, there is a samadhi called the Sun of Skillful Means. Bodhisattvas should train in it in this way." The Bodhisattva asked the Blessed One, "How should they train?" The Blessed One replied, "Son of good family, the Samadhi of the Sun of Skillful Means has seven aspects. What are these? First, just as the sun ripens sprouts, so too, the Bodhisattva's samadhi, like the sun, ripens the sprouts of enlightenment for sentient beings. Second, just as the sun has no partiality, so too, the compassion of the Bodhisattva's samadhi is equal towards all sentient beings. Third, just as the sun burns up dry grass, so too, the Bodhisattva's wisdom of higher seeing burns up the dry grass of afflictions. Fourth, just as the sun melts ice, so too, the Bodhisattva's samadhi is endowed with the wisdom that is the antidote,

Fifth, just as the sun melts the frost, the individual wisdom of the Bodhisattva eliminates the darkness of the apprehended and the apprehender. Sixth, just as the sun revolves around the four continents, the perfect actions of the Bodhisattva liberate beings from the four rivers of suffering. Seventh, just as the sun equally warms everything, the perfect conduct of the Bodhisattva makes all beings extremely joyful, and this method is like the work of warming. Furthermore, sons of good family, Bodhisattvas should train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Therefore, they should train in the fact that all phenomena are without inherent existence, without characteristics, completely separated from all characteristics, without entities, separated from all entities, without persons, separated from all persons, and in the emptiness of inherent nature. Sons of good family, Bodhisattvas should train in the nature of reality, the realm of reality, suchness, the ultimate limit, non-erroneous suchness, non-other suchness, and in truth and ultimate meaning. Then, The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Sunlight Radiating Everywhere: "Sons of good family, Bodhisattvas should also train in the fact that all phenomena are unconditioned and unborn. They should understand that they are naturally peaceful. Sons of good family, those who uphold the sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom will have their karmic obscurations purified. Sons of good family, furthermore, Bodhisattvas should also train in the Perfection of Wisdom." Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Having much learning, striving in the sacred Dharma, Having love for all sentient beings, The armor of diligence is perfectly complete.
