Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in Rajagriha on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a great Sangha of monks, numbering twelve thousand five hundred monks, and also together with countless billions of Bodhisattvas. He was surrounded and attended by billions of gods, including Indra, Brahma, and the protectors of the world, and was seated on a lion throne of auspicious essence. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Noble Avalokiteshvara arose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined together, turned towards the Bhagavan. Smiling, he addressed the Bhagavan as follows: "Bhagavan, the Perfection of Wisdom in Few Letters has great merit. Please explain how merely hearing it can purify all the karmic obscurations of all sentient beings, and ensure they definitely turn towards enlightenment, and how those who diligently practice mantras can accomplish secret mantras without obstacles." The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the noble Avalokiteshvara, said to the Bhagavan: "For the benefit of all sentient beings, please explain." Then, at that time, the Bhagavan entered into the samadhi called 'Liberating all Sentient Beings.' From that samadhi, countless hundreds of thousands of rays of light emanated from the urna hair between his eyebrows. Those rays of light pervaded all Buddha-fields. Whichever sentient beings were touched by that light, even those in the hell realms, all those sentient beings were certain to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. All the Buddha-fields also shook in six ways. A rain of divine sandalwood powder also fell at the feet of the Tathagata. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan spoke the Prajnaparamita, as follows: A Bodhisattva should have equanimity, loving-kindness, gratitude, and a mind free from all sins. This essence of the Prajnaparamita should also be recited. Homage to the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni. Tadyatha. Om Muni Muni Maha Muni Munaye Svaha. By obtaining this Prajnaparamita, I have attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. All Buddhas also arise from this. You have obtained this from the great Tathagata Shakyamuni, therefore you have become the supreme among Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas. You will become a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha named 'King of Light Radiating Everywhere, Glory Accumulating,' the Buddha himself prophesied. E na svāhā. Ultimately, this Perfection of Wisdom generates all Buddhas, is the mother of Bodhisattvas, immediately seizes sins, and bestows enlightenment. For example, even after hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas, all Buddhas could not fully describe its benefits. By reciting this, one will be empowered in all mandalas. All secret mantras will also become manifest. Then, the noble Avalokiteśvara, the great Bodhisattva, said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, for what reason is this called the Perfection of Wisdom? The Bhagavan replied: For the sake of ease. Whatever sentient beings, who have little enthusiasm, hold, recite, write, or cause others to write the Perfection of Wisdom, all of them will easily incline towards enlightenment. Therefore, it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. After he spoke thus, the noble Avalokiteśvara, the great Bodhisattva, said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, to what extent does the Blessed One teach this Dharma discourse for the benefit of all sentient beings, and for the benefit, medicine, and happiness of sentient beings with little merit? Bhagavan, it is wonderful! Sugata, it is wonderful! After the Bhagavan spoke thus, the noble Avalokiteśvara, the great Bodhisattva, and those monks, and those Bodhisattvas, and the gods, and humans, and asuras, and the world with gandharvas rejoiced and praised what the Bhagavan had said.
