Chapter Eighty-Seven: Entrustment Chapter Eighty-Seven: Entrustment Subhuti, as soon as the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita obtained sixty hundred thousand doors of samadhi, in the eastern direction, the southern direction, the western direction, the northern direction, the intermediate directions, below, the direction above, in the ten directions, in the worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, he saw Buddhas, Bhagavat as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, surrounded by the Sangha of monks, and gazed upon by the assembly of Bodhisattvas, teaching this Prajnaparamita in this very manner, with this very name, and with these very letters. For example, just as I am now teaching the Dharma in this three-thousand-great-thousand world realm, surrounded by the Sangha of monks, and gazed upon by the assembly of Bodhisattvas, teaching this Prajnaparamita in this very manner, with this very name, and with these very letters. He thus became greatly learned, possessing inconceivable learning and erudition like the ocean, and wherever he was born, he would not be separated from the Buddha. In every birth, wherever the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, manifested, he would be born in those very places, and even in dreams, he would not be separated from the speech of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. He abandoned all unfavorable conditions and accomplished perfect leisure. Subhuti, in this way, it should also be known that this Prajnaparamita is the means for Bodhisattva Mahasattvas to accomplish the wisdom of all-knowingness. Subhuti, therefore, those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who desire to attain the wisdom of all-knowingness should practice this Prajnaparamita. Then, the Bhagavat said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, for the sake of the Bodhisattvas being able to correctly uphold it, uphold this Prajnaparamita! Recite it! Master it! Understand it thoroughly! And also widely proclaim it to others! Ananda!

This Prajñāpāramitā should be heard, held, recited, read, understood, chanted, received, taught, and intoned by the Bodhisattvas Mahāsattvas. By the blessings of the Tathāgata, the letters on the great book should be written clearly and very clearly, and be honored with various offerings such as flowers, incense, perfumes, unguents, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, flags, and garlands of lamps around it. Treat it as a guru, as a painting, as an object of offering, remember it, and pray to it. Ānanda, this is my instruction. Why is that? Ānanda, what do you think? Is the Tathāgata your teacher? Ānanda replied: Bhagavan, you are my teacher. Sugata, you are my teacher. After answering thus, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, you have served your teacher, the Tathāgata, with loving and pleasing actions of body, loving and pleasing actions of speech, and loving and pleasing actions of mind. Ānanda, therefore, just as you now cherish, have faith in, and respect this body of mine while I am living and dwelling, so too should you act towards this Prajñāpāramitā after my passing. Ānanda, by all means, this Prajñāpāramitā should not disappear, and by all means, you should not become a being of the degenerate age. I entrust this to you twice, three times. I completely entrust it to you. Ānanda, as long as this Prajñāpāramitā is practiced in the world, know that the Tathāgata also abides. Flowers and, clothes and, umbrellas and, victory banners and, flags and so on, garlands of lamps around, and various kinds of offerings and so on, those beings who revere, respect, paint, offer, remember, and pray, should be known as not being separated from seeing the Buddha, not being separated from hearing the sacred Dharma, and not being separated from serving the Sangha. Venerable Ananda, those beings should be known as practicing in the presence of the Tathagata.
