Chapter 82: Showing the Unchanging Nature of Dharma Chapter 82: Showing the Unchanging Nature of Dharma Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if the equality of all dharmas is empty by nature, then since nothing is done for any dharma, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice Prajnaparamita for dharmas that do nothing and have nothing at all? They do not waver from the ultimate truth, and they also do the work of sentient beings with generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and cooperation." After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so, as you said. Subhuti, emptiness does not do anything, whether it is something to be done or not, and there is not even a little bit. Subhuti, if these sentient beings know emptiness by their own nature, then the Tathagata does not waver from emptiness, and he also makes sentient beings free from the thought of self, and after separating them, he also liberates them from samsara by emptiness. Similarly, he also makes them separate from the thought of sentient beings, the thought of the doer, the thought of form, the thought of consciousness, the thought of the eye, the thought of the mind, the thought of the earth element, the thought of the consciousness element, and the thought of the conditioned element, and after separating them, he also places them in the unconditioned realm of emptiness. In this way, the Tathagata will not become the most excellent one." He asked: "Blessed One, what is empty?" The Buddha said: "Subhuti, it is empty of whatever is thought." Subhuti, if one emanation emanates another emanation, do you think there is anything in it that is not emptiness?" He said: "Blessed One, it is not so, there is nothing in the emanation that is not emptiness, what is emptiness and what is emanation, these two are compatible.

No, it is not without. Those two dharmas are empty by emptiness. The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, what do you think? This is illusion, this is emptiness.' Do you think there is such a manifestation of illusion? He replied: 'Blessed One, it is not.' Why is that? Because in emptiness, there are no two dharmas that say, 'This is illusion, this is emptiness.' The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, where is there form, feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness that is not illusion? There is none. Where there is illusion, there is emptiness.' After the Blessed One said this, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: 'Blessed One, if these worldly dharmas are illusion, then are these supramundane dharmas, such as the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, also illusion? What are the fruits of those dharmas? Who are the individuals manifested by those dharmas, such as the stream-enterer, the once-returner, the non-returner, the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, the Bodhisattva, and the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, are the fruits of those dharmas also illusion?' After asking this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: 'Subhuti, all dharmas are illusion, some are illusions of the Shravakas, some are illusions of the Pratyekabuddhas, some are illusions of the Bodhisattvas, some are illusions of the Tathagatas, some are illusions of the afflictions, and some are illusions of the dharmas. Subhuti, therefore, all dharmas are like illusions.' He asked: 'Blessed One, what is abandonment? The fruit of stream-entry and the once-returner...'

the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and the very Dharma of an Arhat, are those also illusions? The ground of a Pratyekabuddha, the ground of a Buddha, and those Dharmas that have abandoned all connections with habitual tendencies, are those also illusions? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, whatever Dharma is produced or prevented, all of those are illusions. He asked: Blessed One, what is that Dharma which is not an illusion? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, that which has no arising and no cessation is not an illusion. He asked: Blessed One, what is that? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, that is the non-deceptive Dharma-nature Nirvāṇa; those Dharmas are not illusions. He asked: Blessed One, as the Blessed One has said, "It does not waver from emptiness, nor is it stained by duality, and there is no Dharma that is not emptiness," according to that, Blessed One, the non-deceptive Dharma-nature Nirvāṇa will also become an illusion? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, it is so, it is so. Subhūti, all Dharmas are empty by their very nature; those were not made by the Śrāvakas, were not made by the Pratyekabuddhas, were not made by the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas, and were not made even by the Tathāgata-Arhat-Sammyaksaṃbuddhas. Whatever is empty by its very nature, that is Nirvāṇa. When this was said, the venerable Subhūti said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if a person who is newly engaged in practice wishes to fully understand the emptiness of the nature of emptiness, how should he be instructed and shown? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, is there first something that exists, and later that thing becomes non-existent? Subhūti, in this, there is neither something nor non-something, neither one's own something nor another's something. Thus, how could there be the view called the emptiness of the nature of something to be fully understood? From the Eighty Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā, the chapter showing the unchanging nature of Dharma is called the eighty-second. Eighty-second chapter, the unchanging nature of Dharma.
