Chapter Seventy-One Chapter Seventy-One Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the equality of all dharmas is emptiness by nature. Therefore, since there is nothing to do with any dharma, how can a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, not waver from the ultimate truth, and yet accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings through generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Just as you have said, emptiness is that which does nothing to anything, and there is nothing that it does not do. If these sentient beings themselves understand emptiness, then they will not waver from emptiness, and they will cause sentient beings to be separated from the concept of self, and having separated from the concept of self, they will be liberated from samsara through emptiness. And they will be separated from the concept of sentient being, the concept of life, the concept of nourishment, the concept of person, the concept of individual, the concept of the strong, the concept of the lord of strength, the concept of the maker, the concept of the feeler, the concept of the knower, the concept of the seer, and having separated from the concept of the seer, they will be liberated from samsara through emptiness. And they will be separated from the concept of form, and having separated from the concept of form, they will be liberated from samsara through emptiness. And they will be separated from the concept of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, and having separated from the concept of consciousness, they will be liberated from samsara through emptiness. And they will be separated from the concept of sense base, element, and dependent origination, and having separated from the concept of dependent origination, they will be liberated from samsara through emptiness. And they will be separated from the concept of the conditioned realm, and having separated from the concept of the conditioned realm, although the nature of the unconditioned realm is emptiness, they will enter into the nature of the unconditioned realm."

Even decline cannot alter the power of the Tathagata's excellent host. The question is, Blessed One, what is empty? The Blessed One said: It is empty of all perceptions. If, Rabjor, someone were to emanate an emanation, would there be anything in it that is not emptiness? The question is, Blessed One, no. There is nothing in that emanation that is not emptiness. Emptiness and emanation, those two dharmas, are neither possessed nor not possessed. Since both are empty of emptiness, why do you make a distinction by saying, 'This is emptiness, this is an emanation'? That is because both emptiness and emanation are not objects of emptiness. The Blessed One said: Rabjor, is there any form, feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness that is not an emanation? Whatever is an emanation is emptiness. The question is, Blessed One, if worldly dharmas are emanations, then are supramundane dharmas, such as the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of miraculous power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the three doors of liberation, the four noble truths, all emptinesses, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, all samadhis, all dharani doors, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha, and their fruits, by which one distinguishes beings who have entered the stream, those who return once, those who do not return, arhats, solitary Buddhas, and Tathagatas, arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas, are these dharmas also like emanations? The Blessed One said: Rabjor, all dharmas are emanations, therefore

Some are emanated by Śrāvakas, some are emanated by Pratyekabuddhas, some are emanated by Bodhisattvas, some are emanated by Tathāgatas, some are emanated by afflictions, some are emanated by karma. Subhūti, therefore, all dharmas are emanations. Subhūti asked: Bhagavan, what is meant by 'abandoned'? Is it the fruit of Stream-enterer, or the fruit of Once-returner, or the fruit of Non-returner, or Arhatship itself, or the state of a Pratyekabuddha, or the state of a Buddha? Are those dharmas that have abandoned all connections of habitual tendencies also emanations? The Bhagavan replied: Subhūti, whatever dharma is produced or ceased, all of them are emanations. Subhūti asked: Bhagavan, what is that dharma which is not an emanation? The Bhagavan replied: Whatever dharma has neither arising nor ceasing, that is not an emanation. Subhūti asked: What is that? The Bhagavan replied: Unequaled Nirvāṇa, that dharma is not an emanation. Subhūti asked: Bhagavan, you have said, 'It does not waver from emptiness, nor does it perceive duality, and there is no such thing as a dharma that is not emptiness.' If so, Bhagavan, will unequaled Nirvāṇa also become an emanation? The Bhagavan replied: Subhūti, it is so, it is so. Subhūti, all dharmas are emptiness; they are not made by Śrāvakas, not made by Pratyekabuddhas, not made by Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, not made by Tathāgata-arhats-perfectly-enlightened-ones; that which is emptiness by its very nature is Nirvāṇa. Subhūti asked: Bhagavan, if a person who is a beginner wishes to fully understand emptiness by its very nature, how should he be instructed and guided? The Bhagavan replied: Subhūti, is there such a thing as something existing before and then something not existing later? Subhūti, here there is neither something existing nor something not existing, neither self-nature nor other-nature. So, what is there to be fully understood as emptiness by its very nature?
