The Twentieth Chapter, Showing the Prohibition of Trading. The Twentieth Chapter, Showing the Prohibition of Trading. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, the group of six monks engaged in various kinds of trading, namely: taking in, sending out, buying in, selling out. How did they take in? When the countryside had a good harvest and the city had a bad harvest, they would take in from the countryside to the city, thus taking in. How did they send out? When the city had a good harvest and the countryside had a bad harvest, they would send out from the city to the countryside, thus sending out. How did they buy in? When the price was low, they would buy in, thus buying in. How did they sell out? When the price was high, they would sell out, thus selling out. Other non-Buddhists and knowledgeable people said: "The Shakyaputra renunciates have not abandoned, have not renounced, have not individually renounced, engaging in various kinds of trading like this, namely taking in, sending out, buying in, selling out. Brahmins and householders also engage in various kinds of trading, namely taking in, sending out, buying in, selling out, so what is the difference between the Shakyaputra renunciates and the Brahmins and householders? What is the thought? What is the difference in action? Who would think to give alms and food to these shaven-headed renunciates?" They blamed each other, they cursed each other. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, because of this event, this basis of discussion, this situation, the Bhagavan convened the assembly of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked the group of six monks: "Monks, is it true that you engage in various kinds of trading, namely taking in, sending out, buying in, selling out?" "Venerable one, it is true."

The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked, saying, "That which is not the way of a renunciant, not in accordance, not suitable, not in accordance with the rules, that is not the work to be done by one who has gone forth." Then, after the Bhagavan had rebuked in various ways, he spoke to the monks: "Monks, therefore, having truly seen ten benefits, the basis of training for the hearers should be established in the Vinaya," as before. My hearers should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya in this way: "Again, any monk who engages in various kinds of buying and selling commits an offense entailing forfeiture." What is "again, any monk"? It is the group of six, or anyone else like that. "Various kinds of buying and selling" means many kinds. "Engages" means taking, giving, buying, and selling, if one engages in them excessively. "An offense entailing forfeiture" means that after abandoning that object, one should confess the offense of downfall. Therefore, it is said to be an offense entailing forfeiture. If asked, how does it become an offense? If a monk buys with the desire for gain, and sells, then he commits a misdeed in buying, and commits an offense entailing forfeiture in selling. If a monk buys with the desire for gain, and sells without the desire for gain, then he commits a misdeed in selling, and there is no offense in selling. If a monk buys without the desire for gain, and sells with the desire for gain, then there is no offense in buying, and he commits an offense entailing forfeiture in selling. If a monk buys without the desire for gain, and sells without the desire for gain, then there is no offense in either case. There is no offense in purifying the previous continuum by means of the activity of another place. Thus, the Bhagavan established the basis of training for the hearers in the Vinaya. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in Vaishali, in the assembly hall of the multi-storied building near the Monkey Pond. At that time, merchants from the northern route, traveling on the road, saw a monastery with a high stable, star...

Windows, latticed windows, and decorated balconies, seeing those things that were pleasing to the eye and had become steps to heaven, they developed faith. They entered the temple and said to the monks, 'Venerable ones, we would like to hold a feast of offerings for the Sangha.' The monks said, 'Bring the implements for the feast of offerings.' They said, 'We have arrived suddenly, so please give us rice in exchange for value.' Because the Blessed One has established the basis for the training, we do not sell rice.' When they said this, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One gave instructions: 'Do not do that, but like this, whoever holds a feast of offerings for the sake of the Sangha, rice should be given for value.' The monks only gave mountain rice, and the Blessed One gave instructions: 'Whoever holds a feast of offerings in the temple itself, rice with husks should be given.' Because the Blessed One made the rule to give rice for value, many people held feasts of offerings, and if it was all given away, the rice would be exhausted, causing the common property to decrease. When this happened, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One gave instructions: 'Do not do that, but like this, other rice should be bought with that value.' The old rice should also be examined separately, and if there are no living beings in it, it should be sold at the appropriate time, and the granaries should be filled with the money from selling the rice.' For beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings, there is no transgression. The twentieth abandonment of buying and selling is complete.' Twentieth, showing the abandonment of buying and selling.
