The twelfth, showing the abandonment of pure black wool. The twelfth, showing the abandonment of pure black wool. The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, the monks were making or having made cushions of pure black wool. When the monks were making or having made cushions of pure black wool, because pure black wool was rare and expensive, it led to many affairs and much making, hindering learning, reading, recitation, yoga, attention, and the inner peace of mind. Those who wanted pure black wool, and the Brahmins and householders who came for the sake of pure black wool, also repeatedly inquired. Why are the monks so lacking in desire? At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this cause, the Bhagavan convened the Sangha of monks, etc., all as previously stated. The Buddha Bhagavans knowingly committed offenses, etc., also as previously stated. The Buddha Bhagavan rebuked the monks: Monks, is it true that you are making cushions of pure black wool? Venerable ones, it is true. The Buddha Bhagavan rebuked the faults of great desire, not knowing satisfaction, being difficult to nourish, and being difficult to satisfy. Then, the Bhagavan praised having few desires.

Having praised contentment, skill in teaching, eagerness to listen, subduing, reducing possessions, the merits of learning, beauty, and understanding of heat and cold, he addressed the monks: "Monks, therefore, having truly seen the ten benefits, you should establish the basis of learning in the Vinaya for the hearers." Thus and so forth, as before. My hearers should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya as follows: "If any monk makes a new seat of pure black sheep's wool, it is an offense entailing forfeiture." What is a monk? It refers to one who upholds this Dharma. What is sheep's wool? It refers to the wool of a sheep. What is pure black? It refers to four kinds of black: naturally black, indigo-dyed black, mud black, and persimmon black. What is a seat? It refers to two kinds of seats: one with filling and one that is fluffy. Here, it refers to the fluffy one. What is new? It refers to two kinds of new: newly made and newly obtained. Here, it refers to the newly made one. What is making? It refers to making it oneself or having others make it. What is an offense entailing forfeiture? It refers to abandoning the object and then confessing the offense of downfall, hence it is called an offense entailing forfeiture. Thus it is said. If asked, how does it become an offense? It is made from strands, wefts, and clusters. If a monk separates the strands of pure black sheep's wool, destroys it, wears it down, as long as a seat is not made, he commits an offense of wrong-doing; if a seat has been made, then he commits an offense entailing forfeiture. If a monk separates the wefts of pure black sheep's wool, destroys it, wears it down, as long as a seat is not made, he commits an offense of wrong-doing; if a seat has been made, then he commits an offense entailing forfeiture. If a monk separates the clusters of pure black sheep's wool, destroys it, wears it down, as long as a seat is not made, he commits an offense of wrong-doing; if a seat has been made, then he commits an offense entailing forfeiture. If a monk separates the strands and wefts of pure black sheep's wool, the strands and clusters, the wefts and clusters, the strands and
