Fifth, distinguishing between good conduct and misconduct. Fifth, distinguishing between good conduct and misconduct. Fifth, distinguishing between good conduct and misconduct, what are the three kinds of misconduct mentioned in the sutras? Regarding this, (the sutras speak of three kinds of misconduct and three kinds of good conduct.) Non-virtuous actions of the body, and the non-virtuous actions of speech and mind included by the word "etc.," are considered as the three kinds of misconduct of body, speech, and mind respectively, because their results are undesirable. So, is only the non-virtuous action of mind the misconduct of mind? No, the three, namely covetousness and the harm intention and wrong view included by "etc.," are afflictions by their nature of desire, harm, and view, and because the action of mind is from the nature of thought, and because actions and afflictions are different, although they are not the nature of the action of mind, they are said to be the three kinds of misconduct of mind. (A distinction of the Sutra School) Those who give examples say that in the Sutra of What Should Be Thought About, it says: Monks, having done and accumulated actions that should be thought about, one will be born in hells. How does one do and accumulate actions that should be thought about? Monks, here some intentionally do and accumulate the three kinds of actions of the body, and the four kinds of actions of speech, and the three kinds of actions of the mind, etc., after speaking extensively, they questioned: Monks, how does one do and accumulate the three kinds of actions of mind that should be thought about? Here, some monks have covetousness, have a mind of harming, have wrong views, etc., until, monks, some others have perverse views. In that sutra, other actions of mind other than covetousness, etc., are not mentioned, but it is said that these three, covetousness, etc., are the actions of mind, and because some actions of mind are also afflictions, it is not contradictory that they are both actions of mind and afflictions. The Vaibhashikas say, if that is the case, then actions and afflictions become one, and if that is what is intended, it contradicts the sutra, because the sutra says: having covetousness, etc.

Etc., to show the mind itself, because it is said that the action of the mind enters through the gate of afflictions. Thus it is said. Virtues that turn back from non-virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind are well-practiced. If right view and wrong view are not virtuous and non-virtuous, because there is no thought of benefiting or harming others, if it is said so, it is because it is the cause of the thought of benefiting or harming. Fifth, the division into good conduct and bad conduct.
