Explanation of the Five Faculties. Explanation of the Five Faculties. The extensive explanation is divided into three, of which the explanation of the five faculties is as follows: Whatever is mentioned as the five objects, such as form, the pure forms of their consciousness are the faculties such as the eye. As it is said in the sutra: Bhikshu, the eye is the inner source, the four great elements are the cause, it is pure form, etc. (And from the collection of consciousness, it is the consciousness of form, not the consciousness of a person.) Because it is said so. In another way, whatever is mentioned as the eye, etc., the pure forms that are the basis of their consciousness. As it is said in the Vibhaga: What is the eye faculty? It is the pure form that is the basis of eye consciousness, etc. Because it is said so. The teacher, the son of the king, says that the former system is in accordance with the sutras, and the latter is in accordance with the world. Whoever adds says that the former system is based on what is known in the world, and the latter is what is known in the scriptures. (However, because the mind consciousness can also focus on form, etc., if one says the consciousness of form, one cannot distinguish between mind consciousness and the five-door consciousness, and if one says the consciousness of the eye, etc., the difference from mind consciousness is established, so the latter statement is reasonable.) Differentiating them, they can be divided into two types: with support and without distinction. The meaning of the name is that seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and knowing, the names of the eye, etc., are arbitrary conventions. Explanation of the Five Faculties.
