Collection of Teachings by Master Bodong Chokley Namgyal JCN15: Distinguishing the Two Truths Distinguishing the Two Truths Distinguishing the Two Truths Oṃ Āḥ Hūṃ Ho! I prostrate to the Sugata-garbha (Tathāgatagarbha), the basis for purifying defilements! I prostrate to the Vajra Yoga, the path for purifying defilements! I prostrate to the Clear Light Dharmakāya, the fruit of purifying defilements! Those who know the distinction between the two truths, are not confused by the Buddha's teachings. May they completely accumulate merit, and attain the perfection of going beyond. As stated in (Madhyamaka Two Truths). Dharma Lord Rinpoche also said: 'In meditative equipoise, do not analyze; in post-meditation, distinguish.' Therefore, in order to become skilled in distinguishing the two truths, I will briefly explain. The ultimate essence of the instructions of the kind (omniscient) Lama Dharma Lord is this: In meditative equipoise, do not analyze or contemplate; in post-meditation, distinguish the two truths. All phenomena are included within the two truths, but these two have different modes: The conventional truth appears but is not real, like an illusion, it is empty in its own nature. The ultimate truth is not empty in its own nature, but is empty of the conventional truth, therefore it is said to be empty of other. The conventional truth is the appearance of delusion, the ultimate truth is the appearance without delusion. The conventional truth is true only in the appearance of delusion, the ultimate truth is true because it is established in reality. The conventional truth is conditioned, deceptive phenomena, the ultimate truth is non-deceptive, unconditioned. The conventional truth is an impermanent phenomenon, the ultimate truth is the nature of permanence. The conventional truth is the suffering of samsara, the ultimate truth is the bliss of nirvana. The conventional truth is the consciousness of ignorance, the ultimate truth is self-aware wisdom. The conventional truth is dependent origination, the ultimate truth is self-arisen wisdom. The conventional truth is the alaya consciousness, the ultimate truth is the alaya wisdom. The conventional truth is what is to be abandoned, the ultimate truth is what is to be attained. The conventional truth is adventitious defilement, the ultimate truth is the Sugata-garbha. The conventional truth is the obscuration of the Dharmakāya, the ultimate truth is the ultimate Dharmakāya. The conventional truth is the imputed and the dependent, the ultimate truth is the immutable, perfectly established. The conventional truth is the darkness of the three realms, the ultimate truth is the clear light of the three realms. The conventional truth has conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, the unconditioned is like space. The conventional truth has two types: pure and impure, the pure (conventional truth) is the path truth (the form body of the ultimately perfect Buddha). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two bodies, Nirmāṇakāya (lOongs sprul) and Dharmakāya (sku), are discussed. From form to omniscient wisdom, the three categories of forms (from form to omniscient wisdom) are explained: parikalpita (kun btags, imputed forms), paratantra (gzhan dbang, dependent forms), and pariniṣpanna (yongs grub, perfected forms). Therefore, form itself is empty of form, and omniscient wisdom is also empty of omniscient wisdom. This is the intention of the (Prajñāpāramitā) Sutra: parikalpita and paratantra (forms) are empty of themselves, while pariniṣpanna (forms, etc.) are empty of the former two (parikalpita and paratantra). Parikalpita and paratantra should be abandoned, while pariniṣpanna forms, etc., should be attained. The five forms, etc., of conventional truth are obscurations, while the five forms, etc., of ultimate truth are the five Buddhas. The five afflictions of conventional truth are obscurations, while the five afflictions of ultimate truth are the five wisdoms. The nature of mind in conventional truth is artificial, while the nature of mind in ultimate truth is intrinsic. The nature of mind in conventional truth is temporary, while the nature of mind in ultimate truth is primordial. If one clings to conventional truth as permanent, one falls into eternalism; if one clings to ultimate truth as non-existent, one falls into nihilism. If one sees conventional truth as non-existent in (ultimate truth), there is no fault; if one sees ultimate truth as existent, there is also no fault. In meditative equipoise, speech, thought, and expression are transcended, but in post-meditation, they are established through terminology. In meditative equipoise, there is no object of meditation or meditator, but in post-meditation, one contemplates all appearances as illusion. In meditative equipoise, the three doors are free from elaboration, but in post-meditation, one strives for virtue with the three doors. If the yoga of meditative equipoise is stable, then there is no need to deliberately create virtuous actions of body and speech. In times of distraction, relax and hold with mindfulness; in times of dullness, adjust posture and gaze. In all times, whether in meditative equipoise or post-meditation, it is extremely important not to be separated from mindfulness and awareness. (First), generate the mind of altruism with mindfulness, (in the middle) whatever virtues of meditative equipoise and post-meditation, (finally) expand with dedication and aspiration. There is no other instruction for practice. Through the blessings of the father lama entering, whatever arises in the mind of the son, is just a little understanding. Please practice the old father's experience! This was written by the monk Phyogs kyi ming can (auspicious name) at the secluded hermitage of Jonang, Samten Dzong. May it benefit many beings! May there be auspiciousness! Checked and proofread twice. Table of Contents: Distinguishing the Two Truths --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
