Introduction. Introduction. In a loud voice: O departed one who has passed from this world to the next, so-and-so, listen well without distraction! Thus, call three times. Now you have experienced what is called the impermanence of death, where the appearances of this life fade and the consciousness of the next arises. However, it is not only you who have experienced this impermanence of death in this way. In general, all compounded phenomena are by nature impermanent. As the Buddha Bhagavan said: "Monks, all compounded phenomena are impermanent." And in the Collection of Instructive Sayings: "Alas! All compounded things are impermanent; they are subject to arising and passing away." In particular, the stable outer world, the layered mountains, continents, environment, golden mountains, pleasure lakes, iron fences, and so on, all these solid and hard things are also impermanent. As Padmasambhava said: "The outer world is destroyed by fire, water, and wind." And the moving inner beings, from the wheel-turning kings of ancient times to the petty kings of today, down to insects and tiny creatures, all beings, high, low, and intermediate, in general, and all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, lamas, khenpos, and sanghas who have come for their benefit, are also impermanent. As the Omniscient Dharma Lord said: "The inner compounded is impermanent, changing and transforming." Likewise, the seasons of this stable and moving realm, summer, winter, autumn, spring, years, months, days, and times, are also impermanent. As Padmasambhava said: "Last year, this year, the seasons, top and bottom, days and nights, moments and times are impermanent." In particular, in this world, all beings, past, present, and future, all beings, high, medium, and low, will certainly die like you now, and it is uncertain when they will die, and death cannot be avoided. First, the reason why death is certain is: "Thus, for all who are born, death is before them." Secondly, the uncertainty of when death will occur is:

From the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Tomorrow and the next life, it is uncertain which will come first. Therefore, do not strive for the affairs of tomorrow, but strive for the meaning of the next life." Thus it is said. Third, the reason why death is of no benefit whatsoever. In the Padma Kathang Yig ( পদ্ম বকা য়ি থং য়িগ ), it says: "Even if the king of medicine himself were to come, he could not extend life when the allotted lifespan is exhausted; there is no recourse to the law of the great power; there is no way to perform Ramda (a type of divination) by touching with hands; there is no way for someone with powerful speech to cast spells; there is no way to bribe with wealth that one does not begrudge; the coward cannot flee to another land; the eloquent cannot engage in debate." As it is said, it is like the sun setting behind the mountain, which no one, high or low, strong or weak, can prevent. Moreover, taking our own land as an example, none of the beings born in all the realms of the world, the houses that are built, the friends who gather, the wealth and food that are accumulated, are permanent. As the Vinaya Sutra says: "What is born will eventually die, what is built will eventually be destroyed, what gathers will eventually disperse, what is accumulated will eventually be exhausted." Among these four endings, you are now facing the ending of what is born—death, which is impermanence. Now is the time when the lama's instructions are needed. Regarding the method of instruction, there are many traditions of the new and old schools, but if we explain the Dzogchen teachings of our own tradition, the way in which people of middling faculties are liberated in the bardo, it is this: from the time you were afflicted by the fatal illness yesterday and the day before, to the very beginning, from birth in the mother's womb, it is called the birth-place bardo. From being afflicted by the fatal illness until the inner breath ceases, it is called the death-moment bardo. From the cessation of the inner breath until the appearance of the spontaneously accomplished phenomena, it is called the dharmata bardo. From the disappearance of the spontaneously accomplished phenomena until the taking of rebirth in the next life, it is called the existence bardo. Among these four bardos, the way to introduce the latter three is: to clarify the death-moment bardo of the arising of confusion, thereby showing the instructions of introduction and transference; to clarify the spontaneously accomplished dharmata bardo, thereby introducing that all three—sound, light, and rays—are self-appearances, thereby generating faith and certainty; to clarify the samsaric existence bardo, thereby attaining a good rebirth through aspiration alone.
