Master Vasubandhu. Master Vasubandhu. It is said that Master Vasubandhu, in Nepal, saw a monk named Hang-u, who wore the robes of a renunciate but did not abide by the monastic vows, holding a bottle of alcohol. He then felt sorrow, saying, "The Dharma is declining," and passed away after reciting the *Namarajavaloka*. A stupa was built, which is said to still exist. In short, he was a monk who renounced from the noble Brahmin caste, having been a Pandit for five hundred lifetimes, understanding and mastering the meaning of ninety-nine or eighty thousand sections of texts. He sealed his mouth with butter and remained silent for twelve days, possessing the brilliance of wisdom. Through compassion, he caused the Dharma to flourish, becoming a friend to beings. As it is said: "The wise praise him as the best, the world speaks of him as a second Buddha, He is the true friend of all beings, named Vasubandhu, he accomplished this." Furthermore, in the *Commentary on the Higher Ground*, it is also said: "The noble Asanga, like the Victorious One, became a wish-fulfilling tree, From the branches of words, flowers of letters are born, Adorned with rain, he became a treasure of wisdom, possessing glory, To his brother, the glorious one, I prostrate." This highly praised master, first explained the teachings of the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, destroying with the sharp sword of reason the root and commentary of the *Abhidharma-kosa*, and explained the meaning of the intermediate turning of the wheel, the Mind-Only teachings, the commentary on the *Mother Sutra of the Victorious Ones*, and the eight sections of the *Distinguishing Treatise*, which explains the ultimate meaning of the final turning of the wheel. Furthermore, there are commentaries on many sutras such as the *Ten Bhumi Sutra*, the *Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra*, the *Gaya Head Sutra*, the *Six-Door Dharani*, the *Four Dharma Sutra*, and many treatises such as the commentary on the *Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata*. In the *Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses*, it is also said: The one called the noble Asanga, the most excellent one with clear fame and wisdom, he explained the true nature of things in detail, and through his merit, those arrogant ones who thought they were experts in distinguishing between things and non-things, Master Vasubandhu gained his position by explaining the meaning of the scriptures. Thus it is said. Master Vasubandhu.
