Fourth, detailed distinctions. Fourth, detailed distinctions. The fourth distinction includes three types: the Dharma of realization, the Dharma of scripture or fruition, the Dharma of practice, and the Dharma of explanation. First, Nirvana, its nature is the complete pacification of all suffering, including its causes. That is, the seven pacifications: the pacification of birth, aging, death, meeting, separation, unfulfilled desires, and the suffering of the five aggregates. Alternatively, the four impermanences, namely, accumulated things will eventually be exhausted, the body will eventually decay, the end of gathering is separation, and life will eventually die. This is the antidote to the four impermanences. The Dharma of practice is the path, the perfection of qualities that leads to the attainment of the Dharma of fruition. It possesses four perfections: it leads to the city of Nirvana, not to the city of Samsara, hence it is "non-existent"; it is connected to Nirvana, without interruption and without change, hence it is "continuous"; it is not stolen by thieves such as desire, hence it is "harmless"; and it possesses the food of delight in the Dharma, hence it is "well-manifested". The Dharma of explanation is the perfection that clarifies the Dharma of the path, and it has four functions: namely, truly hearing "this is the path"; determining "this is the path, and others are not"; clarifying its retinue by saying "the four mindfulnesses and so on are the cause of the path"; and truly revealing the obstacles by saying "afflictions, karma, and obscurations of life are obstacles to the path." These are explained in the Commentary on Dependent Origination. The Dharma of explanation can be divided into two types: the words of the Buddha and the treatises. As it is said: All Dharmas are contained in the words of the Buddha and the treatises, that is, the well-spoken words and the explanation of their meaning. By virtue of this, the teachings of Shakya will long endure in this world.
