For this, the knowable is Dharma because it holds its own characteristics, from holding the characteristic of form as destructible, to holding the characteristic of omniscience as directly perceiving all dharmas, each holding its own characteristics; and holding the common characteristics, that is, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all contaminated phenomena are suffering, all dharmas are selfless, and all nirvana is peaceful. The object of mind is Dharma because it holds its own characteristics, or the mind holds. Life is Dharma because it holds the body or holds the same kind. The scriptures are, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, Dharma is sutras, etc., because it shows the meaning of reasoning and the meaning of determining and holding without error. So it is said. Holding the future and doing what must be done, and holding the behavior of the realm and lineage, so it is the realm Dharma, etc. The three, path, nirvana, and merit, are Dharma because they hold from falling, among which there are two types: holding from falling into evil destinies and holding from falling into samsara. The first is, in the Dhammapada, it says, "In this world and the next, the practitioner of Dharma sleeps happily." Like this, from the faith that arises from trusting in the results of karma, or relying on the correct worldly view, practicing the ten virtues, or meditating on the formless samadhi of worldly concentration, etc. These are called Dharma because they hold from falling into evil destinies, and some non-Buddhists also have it. Holding from falling into samsara is the refuge of the inner path, the supreme Dharma of those who are free from desire, that is, nirvana, and the path truth that is the means to attain it and its retinue. The Mahayana path, nirvana, and scriptures hold from falling into the Hinayana, with the union of wisdom realizing no self-nature and great love and compassion, holding from falling into existence and peace. In particular, the meaning of the term noble Dharma is, the noble one is the perfect Buddha, because the Dharma taught by him is the noble Dharma, or noble is supreme, and it is also Dharma, so it is the noble Dharma.
