Introducing the Alaya Consciousness. Introducing the Alaya Consciousness. Thirdly, introducing the Alaya Consciousness: As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: Just as the waves of the ocean arise due to the wind, they dance and merge into it, continuing without interruption. Similarly, the river of Alaya also constantly arises due to the condition of objects. With various waves of consciousness, it dances and merges into it. The minds of sentient beings enter into the objects of grasping and the grasped. The meaning is: The Alaya Consciousness is like the ocean, the seven entering consciousnesses are like the waves of the ocean, and objects such as form are like the wind, the cause of the waves arising in the ocean. The Alaya Consciousness alone enters into the various objects of the grasped and the various objects of the grasping senses. Just as all the waves of the ocean are the nature of the ocean and the manifestation of the ocean, all of samsara in the six realms are the nature and manifestation of their respective Alaya Consciousness. Moreover, the Alaya Consciousness itself, due to the power of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, manifests in various forms such as the container world and its contents, body, enjoyment, happiness, and suffering. In this, the Alaya Consciousness, from the aspect of clinging to the continuity of its own aggregates as self, is the afflicted mind. From the aspect of entering various forms through the path of the eye, it is the eye consciousness. From the aspect of entering various sounds through the path of the ear, it is the ear consciousness. From the aspect of entering various smells through the path of the nose, it is the nose consciousness. From the aspect of entering various tastes through the path of the tongue, it is the tongue consciousness. From the aspect of entering various tactile sensations through the path of the body, it is the body consciousness. From the aspect of entering various phenomena through the path of the mind, it is the mind consciousness. Therefore, without the Alaya Consciousness, there is not even the slightest suffering in the three realms of samsara. Because the Alaya Consciousness itself is all the habitual tendencies of samsara, all the seeds, all the actions, and all the ripened results. For example, just as waves of the ocean cannot exist without the ocean. Therefore, the Alaya Consciousness itself is the twelve links of dependent origination of the wheel of existence.

What arises from duality is that, conditioned by ignorance, actions arise; conditioned by actions, consciousness arises; conditioned by consciousness, name and form arise; conditioned by name and form, the six sense sources arise; conditioned by the six sense sources, contact arises; conditioned by contact, feeling arises; conditioned by feeling, craving arises; conditioned by craving, grasping arises; conditioned by grasping, becoming arises; conditioned by becoming, birth arises; conditioned by birth, old age and death arise, as well as sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and confusion. Because it is not mixed with happiness, it is a purely suffering aggregate; because it is not mixed with qualities, it is a purely fault aggregate. So, how should it be known and distinguished? It should be known as impermanent, suffering, selfless without autonomy, empty of essence, like a disease, like a sore, like a dart, like a sin, dependent on others, having the nature of destruction, unstable, having the nature of utter destruction, various fears, various harms, and like a contagious disease. If the antidote of non-conceptual samadhi is not generated, then this wheel of ignorance of the twelve branches will continuously turn without end or increase. As it says in the Compendium: "When conditions gather, the wheel of suffering arises; this wheel of ignorance has no end and no increase." This is its meaning. If you cultivate the antidote of non-conceptual samadhi, then samsara, which is without essence and is purely an aggregate of suffering, will cease, and you will attain Buddhahood. As it says in the Stainless Light Sutra: "Samsara is without essence and ceases; from this, the Buddhahood of a person is the result." And as it says in the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes: "Unreal imagination is neither truly existent nor completely non-existent; its cessation is said to be liberation." This is its meaning. Therefore, all the faults and shortcomings of the alaya-consciousness should be known and distinguished. Identification of Alaya-consciousness.
