Distinguishing the appearances of the two. Distinguishing the appearances of the two. Secondly, distinguishing the appearances of the two is: consciousness does not appear as the appearance of wisdom, and wisdom does not appear as the appearance of consciousness. Therefore, it is impossible for the appearances of the two to be the same. The appearance of consciousness is the appearance of illusion, the appearance of impurity, the appearance of perversion, the appearance of ignorance, the appearance of grasping and being grasped, the appearance of proliferation, the appearance of attachment and aversion, the appearance of falsehood, the appearance of suffering, and the appearance of various kinds of hunger, thirst, poverty, and so on. The appearance of wisdom, on the other hand, is the appearance of non-illusion, the appearance of purity, the appearance of great truth, the appearance of perfection, and so on, which are appearances that are the opposite of the appearance of consciousness. Among them, the appearance of consciousness, as stated in the "Arya Sutra": "To mistake existence for non-existence is delusion, to mistake impermanence for permanence is delusion, to mistake non-existence for existence is delusion, to mistake permanence for permanence is delusion. Delusion deceives delusion, and when deceived, delusion is established. Beings are deluded about the true meaning by the power of delusion. Deluded about the cause, they are deluded about the three results of the lower realms." Furthermore, the conventional appearance of consciousness does not appear to wisdom, as stated in the extensive commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses: "What is called like a dream is that the phenomena seen in a dream do not appear in the same way when one wakes up. Similarly, the phenomena that are imputed, such as the five aggregates of appropriation, appear when one is asleep in the sleep of ignorance, but when ignorance is awakened and one attains the wisdom of the noble ones, they no longer appear in that way." Furthermore, in the wisdom that awakens from the sleep of ignorance, nothing of the appearance of ignorance and consciousness appears, as stated by Aryadeva, quoting the teachings of Nagarjuna: "When the eye is free from cataracts, perfectly pure and without stain, hairs, flies, and lunar eclipses, and the colors of peacocks are not seen. The wise, having removed the obscurations of afflictions and knowable objects, in their pure and stainless wisdom, likewise see nothing. For example, when one falls asleep and is under the power of sleep, one sees sons and daughters, palaces, and dwellings, but upon waking, one does not see them. Likewise, when the eye of intelligence is opened and one is free from the sleep of ignorance, the conventional consciousness [disappears]."

They are not visible when awakened from sleep. Similarly, for the conceptual consciousness that perceives phenomena, suchness does not appear; and for the wisdom that perceives suchness, phenomena do not appear. In distinguishing between phenomena and suchness, it is said: When this appears, suchness does not appear; when this does not appear, suchness appears. Also, what appears to ordinary beings does not appear to noble ones, and what appears to noble ones does not appear to ordinary beings. The Ornament of the Sutras states: Children are obscured by what is true, and what is untrue appears everywhere. Bodhisattvas eliminate this, and what is true appears everywhere. And, what is meaningless and what is meaningful should be known as not appearing and appearing. The noble Nagarjuna says in the Stages of Meditation on the Middle Way: How things exist, that is the realm of the noble ones. As it does not appear to children, so it does not appear to the wise. The great Virupa also said: Sentient beings have the impure appearance of afflictions, yogis have the appearance of the decline of samadhi, and Sugatas have the pure appearance of the inexhaustible wheel of ornaments of body, speech, and mind. Therefore, in order to recognize the nature of mind, it is very important to distinguish between the deluded appearance of karma and the appearance of clear light. Bodhisattvas do not see the five aggregates of the alaya-consciousness, but they see all the dharmas of the alaya-wisdom; the conceptual consciousness does not abide in anything, but it abides in the suchness of wisdom. Such statements are also found in reliable scriptures, and should be understood accordingly. Therefore, the appearance of the alaya-consciousness, in distinguishing between phenomena and suchness, says: Because what is non-existent appears, it is delusion, the cause of pervasive affliction, like the appearance of an illusory elephant, etc.; because what exists does not appear. The way the alaya-wisdom appears, in the Description of Names, says: Great appearance, great clarity, great light, manifesting in various ways; the appearance of wisdom, bright and clear, all forms, the splendor of appearance, light blazing in the hand, the one who appears. And so on. The noble Nagarjuna says in the Three Natures: By focusing on the realm of dharma, it becomes the immediate cause of perfect accomplishment. By the immediate cause of perfect accomplishment, the mind of enlightenment possesses the three kayas, the self, and is unsurpassed.
