The Reality of the Two Truths, the Ālaya. The Reality of the Two Truths, the Ālaya. Third, from distinguishing and separately introducing, there are four parts: the reality of the two truths, the Ālaya; the distinction between the appearances of the two; the introduction to the Ālaya consciousness; and the introduction to the Ālaya wisdom. First, the reality of the two truths, the Ālaya, is: the characteristics and essence of the two truths are neither the same nor different, but rather a difference that negates sameness. As stated in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "The realm of conditioned things and the nature of ultimate reality are free from being one or different. Whoever thinks of them as one or different does not know them as they truly are." And as stated in the *Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmatā*: "These two are neither one nor separate, because of the difference between existence and non-existence, they exist because of existence and non-existence." The meaning is: the two truths are not the same, because in the ultimate truth, there is the difference that the ultimate truth exists, and the conventional truth does not exist. Nor are they separate, because in the ultimate truth, the ultimate truth itself does not have the grasping of distinctions of the conventional truth. Thus, the state of the two truths being mixed is like milk mixed with butter, mud mixed with water, water mixed with hot and cold water, and water mixed with milk. As stated in the *In Praise of Dharmadhātu*: "Just as when mixed with milk, the essence of butter is not visible, so too, when mixed with afflictions, the dharmadhātu is not seen. Just as when milk is purified, the essence of butter becomes stainless, so too, when afflictions are purified, the dharmadhātu becomes extremely stainless." And as: "Just as water residing in the earth remains without stain, so too, wisdom in afflictions remains without stain." And as: "Just as water in summer is called warm, and in cold times it is called cold, so too, when covered by the net of afflictions, it is called sentient being, and when free from afflictions, it is called Buddha." And as: "Just as when milk and water are mixed and exist in one container, the swan drinks the milk and not the water, so it exists. So too, afflictions

is covered. Even though the wisdom body exists alone in this place, the yogi obtains wisdom, while those who do not know abandon it. This means that wisdom and ignorance exist together in the present body. The way in which consciousness obscures wisdom is like earth and stones obscuring treasure, and a vase obscuring a lamp inside the vase. This is explained through many examples in texts such as the Essence Sutra, the Uttaratantra Shastra, and the Dharmadhatu Praise.
