Chapter Five on the Mind of Enlightenment Chapter Five on the Mind of Enlightenment It is necessary to meditate on love, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, making these three the essential points. If the mind of enlightenment is generated at the time of attaining enlightenment, then whatever virtuous deeds are done in a single day and night will become the mind of enlightenment. Whatever afflictions, discursive thoughts, unfavorable circumstances, illnesses, obstacles, and unpleasant sufferings arise, do not treat them as things to be abandoned, but rather take them onto the path. Furthermore, the suffering I experience in this way is the maturation of sins from beginningless time. Because the cause is not reversed, the result will not be reversed. Therefore, do not meditate in the manner of abandoning and applying remedies, but rather meditate on the remedy itself. Whatever is unpleasant is itself the mind. If the mind itself is meditated upon as the Great Seal, then that very circumstance will go onto the path, because the mind is the Great Seal. Secret mantra is making the fruit into the path, and experiencing the maturation of the path—suffering—is itself the non-dual wisdom. There is no need to distinguish between the arising of the cause and the ripening of the fruit. Understanding in this way, it is sufficient to know that all appearances are meditation. Whatever is experienced, all phenomena of appearance and existence, samsara and nirvana, are nothing other than the mind. There is no meditation other than the mind. If one understands in this way, then all that should be abandoned and the act of abandoning become non-dual companions. If one meditates on whatever is unpleasant transforming into the path itself, then adverse circumstances will become companions. Experience becomes the essential point. When suffering is purified in its own place and everything dawns as bliss, the desire for happiness vanishes because of seeing equality. When experience and realization become the essential point, obstacles of demons arise from humans and non-humans. This is because the maturation of bad karma is being exhausted, karma is not deceiving, or at this time of interdependent origination, a great suffering is experienced all at once. This is because meditation strikes the essential point and virtuous deeds are powerful, thus arousing karma. If one meditates without distraction at this time, then all obscurations will be purified and everything will dawn as bliss. At this time, immeasurable harm will come from humans and non-humans. In general, all sentient beings, especially those who bring harm, are not others, but rather the karmic debts of the mother. Therefore, to them

Without generating a mind of hatred, in general, I act as a true practitioner. Because I am a person who relies on such experience and realization for practice, these mothers have harmed me. These mothers must experience immeasurable suffering. In particular, because they have obstructed meditation, they must be born in hell. Having been born, there is immeasurable suffering. I cannot even bear my own illness and suffering, let alone the suffering of being born in hell, which is unimaginable. Therefore, how can one generate a mind of hatred towards those who are not harming? There is no one more kind than a mother, and if a son causes suffering to his mother, is there any greater ripening of karma than this? Knowing this, in order to prevent all sentient beings, especially these mothers, from experiencing suffering, one should cultivate loving-kindness, wishing them happiness; compassion, wishing them to be free from suffering; and the mind of enlightenment, wishing to attain Buddhahood. Instead of thinking of one's own happiness, one should focus single-mindedly on the thought that the harmer might experience suffering. Knowing that both the harmer and oneself are one's own mind, one should experience the mind in meditation. The meaning of the precious Lama taking on suffering, as explained in the context of the ground of manifestation, is very important. All unfavorable aspects are pacified, and the result of great bliss is attained. Chapter Five of the Mind of Enlightenment. Chapter Five of the Mind of Enlightenment.
