Instructions to Yerrapa Instructions to Yerrapa Namo Guru. The venerable Lama Yerrapa sent a letter saying, "Do not meditate on non-conceptuality; meditate on conceptuality," but he did not understand it. Therefore, he said, "Please write clearly its meaning and send it to me." Therefore, do not meditate on non-conceptuality that is not grasped by realization, because it is a place of straying. Meditate on thoughts, because emptiness is wisdom. Furthermore, all phenomena of appearance, existence, samsara, and nirvana are the self-manifestation of each mind, appearing as such. The various sufferings and happiness experienced by sentient beings are the result of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Whatever thought arises is itself emptiness. Do not meditate on non-conceptuality that is difficult to realize. When phenomena are merely realized as mind, there is no duality of object and subject. There is no need to meditate on phenomena as emptiness. By meditating on the mind, one becomes a Buddha. Do not meditate outwards with the mind; do not expect meditation to come inwards. All phenomena are one's own mind. The mind is the Great Seal. Since there is nothing else that is not meditation, one's own mind is meditation. One's own mind is the Buddha; do not seek the result from elsewhere. It is also because of this that the Dakini Treasure Trove Tantra says, "In this life, one is the supreme Buddha; by meditating on the mind, one becomes a Buddha; apart from the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no sentient being." The venerable Lama said, "Mind itself is born together as the Dharmakaya; appearance is born together as the light of the Dharmakaya, like the sun and its rays." This is the instruction of Tiripa for recognizing one's own mind as the Buddha, which is the heart essence of the great Lama Yerrapa. May it be virtuous! Instructions to Yerrapa
