Explanation of the Six Extremes and Four Modes Explanation of the Six Extremes and Four Modes ༈ Explanation of the Six Extremes and Four Modes. Namo Guru. The distinction between the six extremes and four modes is as follows: If a single word does not convey two or more meanings, it is the six extremes; if it conveys four or three meanings, it is the four modes. An extreme is so-called because it indicates contradiction or disagreement, like the tip of a finger or the end of a breathing tube. Furthermore, the difference between direct meaning and definitive meaning depends on the extreme of meaning, i.e., the disagreement of meanings. The difference between intentional and non-intentional depends on the extreme of words. The difference between literal and non-literal mostly depends on the extreme in both cases. Among these, direct meaning and definitive meaning refer to a single word that, for beings with poor fortune, reveals the non-profound generation stage, and for individuals with good fortune, like jewels, reveals the profound completion stage. Intentional explanation refers to revealing the meaning of luminosity and union to individuals with sharp faculties, using words that contradict that meaning. Non-intentional explanation refers to mainly revealing the completion stage with words that accord with the meaning to sharp-witted individuals who desire the supreme. Literal meaning refers to mainly revealing the generation stage with words that are well-known in the world or in treatises. Non-literal meaning refers to what is not known to worldly people but is a coded language used by the Tathagatas or dakinis. Thus, these six are such that a single vajra word does not change to another meaning. The explanation of the four modes, which are like ornaments, is that a single vajra word can express four or three meanings. Among these, the meaning of letters is explained by emphasizing the syllables of the letters through the power of sound. The common meaning is a common explanation, and this is also twofold. Sutras common to the Sutra school and others are common, i.e., explaining a common dharma. Explaining a common dharma of the generation stage is the commonality of the generation stage. Among the three hidden aspects, the three minds reveal both the three minds themselves and what is related to them. The hidden aspect of desire-dharma reveals mudras and samadhi. The conventional (truth) reveals both the conventional (truth) itself and the dharmas related to it. These are set as hidden because the essence is hidden; since it is not a common meaning, the meaning of the mind is the essence.

That is hidden by the teacher, and all three are hidden because they are for the benefit of sentient beings. The two ultimate points are the ultimate of the clear light reality and the ultimate of the union path. Alternatively, clear light is the ultimate of the pāramitā path, and union is the ultimate of mantra, also showing the union itself and the dharma related to it. Although there are ten ways of explaining that show the oneness in meaning, however, due to the different expressions, six extremes and four modes of difference arise. For example, a single vase has many different expressions such as vase, kalasha, and so on. Regarding the characteristics of a person, like the characteristics of an utpala flower, there are three: hearing a lot, remembering at the time of hearing, and forgetting both the words and meaning after hearing. Like a white lotus, there are three: hearing a lot, remembering at the time of hearing, and not being able to show it to others. Like a red lotus, there are four: great faith, great compassion, hearing a lot, and being able to speak the meaning of what is heard. Like sandalwood, there are five: hearing little, great pride, having no root of meaning, much verbal elaboration, and not being able to be grasped by others. Like a jewel, there are seven: pure morality, learned, intelligent, great wisdom, constant, great compassion, hearing a lot, and being able to show it well to others. The etymology is that because it is similar to utpala and so on, it is said to be like utpala and so on. Examining whether it is suitable for listening, speaking, and meditating: like utpala and red lotus, it is suitable as a listener, because even if the meaning of what is heard is forgotten, it leaves an impression on the mind, and later results will arise. As a speaker and meditator, it is not suitable in that situation, because having spoken the words and meaning, there is nothing to show and meditate on now. Like white lotus and sandalwood, these two are suitable as listeners and practitioners, but not as speakers, because they lack the qualities of speech and cannot be grasped by others. Like a jewel, it is suitable in all situations. This is a detailed explanation of the differences in the faculties of practitioners. Explanation of the six extremes and four modes.
