Instructions on the Three Bardos Instructions on the Three Bardos Homage to the gurus, yidams, and dakinis of the lineage of accomplished ones. I prostrate with utmost reverence at their lotus feet. These are the instructions of the great Naropa, the meaning spoken by the root guru. This is the instruction on the three bardos, to be written in my own notebook. O wise and intelligent young one, even if you desire to go to the pure land of the three kayas, You need a guru to guide the way, You need companions on the path of love, compassion, and bodhichitta, You need to accumulate the two accumulations as provisions for the journey, You need the lamps of the two wisdoms. Why are these necessary? Because on the path you wish to travel, There is the darkness of the abyss of ignorance. In the three bardos, there are four straits, And each of these has four stages, And each of these has four terrifying enemies, And each of these has four escorts. If you are freed from these straits, you will arrive at a place of bliss. Why is it necessary to arrive there? In order for oneself to attain supreme accomplishment, to realize perfect enlightenment, In order to turn the wheel of Dharma, In order to ripen and liberate beings to be tamed, In order to perfect the pure lands and qualities. Rather than not finding a place to settle, And wandering back and forth many times, Should you not seek a place of eternal bliss? Although all places are not places to go, The teacher is the only guide. Vajradhara, the Great Sage, Shakyamuni, and others, Have left the path of those who have passed before. The supreme place is the lord of all, The teachings spoken by the guru are the essential Dharma. Perhaps it can benefit others? Therefore, I, Raspa, have written this down. May the gurus and yidams forgive me. May all sentient beings, Through the three kayas abiding in the ground, Through the kindness of the guru, realize it, Through meditation, experience it, And thereby attain the three kayas of the result! Completed. Instructions on the Three Bardos.
