This can be done when one is dying or at any time. Casting arrows to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is actually offering to the Three Jewels and presenting mentally created offerings. Holding fragrant incense in hand, with intense devotion, say this: "I beseech the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions, who possess compassion, possess wisdom, possess the eye of wisdom, possess love, and have become the protectors of beings. Please come to this place of compassionate power, please accept the actual offerings and the mentally created offerings. Compassionate ones, you possess the wisdom of profound knowledge, the compassion of loving-kindness, the benefit of activities, and immeasurable power of protection. Compassionate ones, this person named so-and-so will go from this world to the beyond, will abandon this world, will be lifted by great fear, has no friends, has great suffering, has no refuge, has no protector, has no relatives, the light of this life vanishes, will go to another place, enter thick darkness, fall into a great precipice, enter a dense forest, be driven by the force of karma, go to a great solitude, be carried away by a great ocean, be struck by the wind of karma, go to a direction without a foothold, enter a great battlefield, be seized by a great demon, fear and dread the messengers of Yama, and enter existence again in the existence of karma, without autonomy. Pray that compassion, skillful means, and power may not diminish. Hold us with compassion. Do not let sentient beings be dominated by negative karma. Pray that the Three Jewels protect us from the suffering of the bardo. With great devotion, oneself and others should recite this three times. Then, recite the 'Bardo Thongdrol,' the 'Bardo Throngdrolma,' and the 'Averting Fear' aspiration prayers. Offer the 'Ra Da' aspiration prayer to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have not yet attained Buddhahood, until samsara is emptied. Samaya. This was composed by the Ugyen Khenpo Padmasambhava. Tsogyal wrote it down and concealed it as a treasure, which Karma Lingpa retrieved from the Gampo Kangra mountain.
