Homage to the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. 1. The Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, the sun, who is enlightenment, compassion, and light; He awakened the lotus-like multitude, I bow to him. 2. The Good Dhamma, the sun, having made the world free from darkness; Destroyed by the Sage, rightly manifested, I bow to it. 3. Filled with the fragrance of virtue, the Buddha, the Good Dhamma, the great one; The Saṅgha, the lotus born of water, the life, he pleased, I bow to him. 4. Having bowed to my teacher, named Padumarama, the resident; Relying on the Pāli, I will compose the Dhātupāṭhavilāsini. 5. This composition is done by one devoted to the Teacher's teachings; In the village called Mūkalaṃgamu, made by good people. 6. Dwelling in the monastery named Suvisuddhārāma; There, the chief elder, grateful and of peaceful conduct. 7. That elder, named Guṇālaṅkāra, devoted to the lineage of elders; Approached me and requested, my friend, with a humble mind. 8. "When I am a Buddha in the world, I will give instructions then," thus; Who would attain such great pride, what to say of destroying? The instrumental case is different from the ablative case, when there is mindfulness of the bhūādi group; The pure agent is expressed in the verbal explanation, relying on all verbal roots. When used by the agent, it stands as the principal; It accomplishes the action, its indicator is the word in the teaching. The instrumental meaning is mostly seen; In the explanation, it is said with reference to the causative sense. Not in the name, the causative sense is understood, and so on; "They make even dogs eat," such words; Having brought them, the wise one skilled in usage should explain; The truth has been told briefly, with the expression "paccanta." The connection of the word "bhuyyate" is the indication of becoming; In the instruction text, the form is "vihoti" or "vihavīyati"; Even from such a demonstration, the instrumental case is firm; Similarly, in the Dhajagga Sutta, spoken by the Sage; "So pahīyissati," even from such a Pāli demonstration; Through the power of perfections, like the bodies of great sages; The production of "sanni" is not like the words of Sanskrit, etc.; The connection of the three persons is only through the instrumental demonstration. Even a singular or plural form; Should be done, let there be patience, in the active voice and so on- In grammar, a verb is very difficult in Pāli; Therefore, the method of grasping it has been stated thus far by me. That which is threefold in time, threefold in person, threefold in case, expressive of action; Having self-gender and dual number, that is called a verb. The ocean of verbs, agitated by the waves of tense, Shining with roots, with suffixes as the time-fish, With the shore of elision and inflection, The wise cross over with the boat of their diverse intellect. Eye, akkha, nayana, netta, locana, diṭṭhi, dassana; Pekkhana, acchi, pamhantu, are called pakhuma. "Having been banished from his own country, having gone to another land, He would build a great fortress, to report harsh words"- This is ancient, Atula, not like today, They criticize the one sitting silently, they criticize the one speaking much; They criticize even the one speaking moderately, there is no one un-criticized in the world- Just as a border city is "guarded" both inside and outside, So "protect" yourself, let not the moment pass you by- Shame on you for eating vomit, for the sake of life, I will vomit what I have already vomited, death is better than living- A person is robbed as long as it suits him, And when others rob him, he, having been robbed, robs- "Heedfulness is the path to immortality, heedlessness is the path to death, The heedful do not die, the heedless are as if already dead." 1.
