people from the Kaśmīra-Gandhāra country arrived and, seeing the elder, said, "The elder is more powerful than even our Nāga king," and, having paid homage to the elder, sat down. The elder preached to them the Āsīvisopama Sutta. At the conclusion of the Sutta, eighty thousand beings realized the Dhamma. A hundred thousand families went forth into homelessness. From then on, Kaśmīra-Gandhāra, up to the present day, has been illuminated by the saffron robe, a place where ascetics come and go. Having gone to Kaśmīra-Gandhāra, the ascetic Majjhantika then, having appeased the wicked Nāga, released many from bondage. However, now, in the Kaśmīra-Gandhāra country, the light of the Sāsana is not visible, as if the sun has set; therefore, there is nothing to say in detail about the establishment of the Sāsana there. Thus ends the seventh chapter of the account of the Sāsana's lineage in the Kaśmīra-Gandhāra country in the Sāsanavaṃsa. enriched. 8. The Story of the Dispensation in the Mahiṃsaka Kingdom 8. Now the occasion has arrived to tell the story of the Dispensation in the Mahiṃsaka Kingdom, according to the matrix mentioned. Therefore, I shall tell it. At the end of the Third Council, the Elder Mahāmoggaliputtatissa sent the Elder Mahāreva to the Mahiṃsaka region, saying, "You go to this country and establish the Dispensation there." And he, with five companions, went to the Mahiṃsaka region, thinking that a group of five was sufficient for the ordination ceremony in the border regions. The Elder went to the Mahiṃsaka region and preached the Devadūta Sutta. At the end of the discourse, forty thousand beings attained the Dhamma-eye. Forty thousand beings also went forth. Having gone to the Mahiṃsa country, The great and powerful Reva; Exhorted with divine messengers, Released many from bondage. But now, the opportunity for the Dispensation there, as if it were a hidden sun, appears weak. Thus, in the Chronicle of the Dispensation, the Story of the Dispensation in the Mahiṃsaka Kingdom, Is the eighth chapter. 9. The Story of the Dispensation in the Mahāraṭṭha Kingdom 9. Hereafter, I shall tell the story of the Dispensation in the Mahāraṭṭha Kingdom, according to the matrix mentioned. At the end of the Third Council, the Elder Mahāmoggaliputtatissa sent the Elder Mahādhammarakkhita to the Mahāraṭṭha Kingdom, saying, "You go to this country and establish the Dispensation there." And the Elder Mahādhammarakkhita, with five companions, went to the Mahāraṭṭha Kingdom and, by means of the Mahānāradakassapa Jātaka story, gladdened the people of Mahāraṭṭha and established eighty-four thousand beings in the paths and fruits. Thirteen thousand went forth. Thus, he established the Dispensation there. Having gone to the Mahāraṭṭha country, That great Dhammarakkhita; Having told the Jātaka, Gladdened the great populace. It is said that previously, the people there mostly performed wrong actions such as fire sacrifices. For that reason, the Elder preached the Mahānāradakassapa Jātaka story. From then on, the people there wished very much to hear Jātaka stories. And the bhikkhus mostly taught Jātaka stories to the householders. Especially, the Jātaka stories of the rainy season retreat, those people listened to, having honored them with many offerings. And that country, Mahāraṭṭha by name, was situated near Syāmaraṭṭha. Therefore, the residents of Syāmaraṭṭha, both bhikkhus and householders, mostly wished to hear them. And the Elder Mahādhammarakkhita, together with the residents of Mahāraṭṭha, taught the Dhamma to all the residents of Syāmaraṭṭha. He gave them the taste of deathlessness, just as the Elder Yonakadhammarakkhita went to another country and (taught) all the residents of Maramma. And what was said in the chronicle of the Dispensation in Yonakaraṭṭha, all that should also be seen here, because it stands as one and the same. Thus, the Elder Nāgasena, having resided in Yonakaraṭṭha, established the Dispensation in Syāmaraṭṭha and other places as well. The Elders Mahādhammagambhīra and Mahāmedhaṅkara, residents of Yonakaraṭṭha, together with many bhikkhus, went to the island of Sihala. And having returned from there, they reached the city of Sokkatayana in Syāmaraṭṭha. Having settled there, they upheld the Dispensation. Afterwards, having settled in the city of Lakunna, they upheld the Dispensation. Thus, it should be understood that the Dispensation established in Yonakaraṭṭha is also established in Syām and other places. In the ninetieth year after two thousand two hundred years from the Parinibbāna of the Blessed Buddha, in the third year from the anointing of King Kittissirirājasīha, who had attained kingship in the island of Sihala, having received the message and gifts sent by that very King Kittissirirājasīha, the lineage established by the Elders led by Upāli, who came to the island of Laṅkā by the command of the righteous great king Sarāmādhipati, is known as the Upāli lineage. And that is of two kinds: those residing in Pubbārāma Vihāra and those residing in Abhayagiri Vihāra. Thus, it should be known that the Dispensation stands firm in the great cities of Yonaka and Kalyāma. Thus in the chronicle of the Dispensation. The Path of the Chronicle of the Dispensation in the Great Countries The Ninth Chapter. 10. The Path of the Chronicle of the Dispensation in the Country of China 10. Hereafter I shall speak of the path of the chronicle of the Dispensation in the country of China, according to the established summary. Indeed, at the end of the Third Council, the Elder Mahāmoggalliputtatissa sent the Elder Majjhima to the country of China, saying: "You go to that country and establish the Dispensation there." The Elder Majjhima, together with the Elder Aḷakarevatā of the Kassapa clan, the Elder Dundabhi, and the Elder Mahārevata, went to the five countries of China in the Himalayan region. By means of the discourse on the Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dhamma, they gladdened that region and enabled eighty crores of beings to attain the precious gems of the path and its fruits. All five of those Elders gladdened the five countries. A thousand people ordained under each of them. Thus, they established the Dispensation there. Having gone, the Elder Majjhima Gladdened the Himalayas; Proclaiming the army of yakkhās, The Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dhamma. It is said that the people there mostly worshipped the yakkhās, the lords of the Candīparamī. Therefore, those five Elders, having proclaimed their army of yakkhās, taught the Dhamma. The country of Kasmīra-Gandhāra was sometimes under the dominion of the king of China, and sometimes it was separate. It should be understood that at that time, it was separate. However, in the country of China, the Dispensation of the Blessed One remained weak, not firm. Therefore, now the Dispensation is seen there only as a shadow in some places, standing like a cloud scattered by the force of the wind. Thus, in the Sāsanavaṃsa, the Path of the Chronicle of the Dispensation in the Country of China The Tenth Chapter. Thus, the Path of the Chronicle of the Dispensation is entirely completed. And by this much – By the virtuous monk Citrañāṇa, Who came to Laṅkā; By the name Saraṇaṅkara, Desiring the establishment of the good Dhamma. From a distant island, By Sumaṅgala, the luminous one; And by Visuddhasīlin, A monk from another island country. And implored by others, named Paññāsāmī; I composed an excellent treatise, illuminating the lineage of the Dispensation. When two thousand two hundred and twenty-three (years) had passed; On the full moon of Migasīra, it was entirely completed. If any fault is found herein by discerning ones; May they forgive it, and for purity, may they accept what is proper.
