the commentary named Vimalavilāsinī on the Vimānavatthu; the commentary named Vimalavilāsinī on the Petavatthu; the sub-commentary named Paramatthamañjūsā on the Visuddhimagga; the sub-commentary named Līnatthappakāsanī on the four commentaries, starting with the Dīghanikāya commentary; the sub-commentary on the Jātaka commentary, named Līna... He made these fourteen texts: the Ṭīkā named Tthappakāsanī, the Ṭīkā on the Netti Commentary, the Ṭīkā named Paramatthadīpanī on the Buddhavaṃsa Commentary, and the Anuṭīkā named Līnatthavaṇṇanā on the Abhidhamma Commentary. Two former teachers made the Cullanirutti Ṭīkā named Ācariyānirutti Mañjūsā and the Mahānirutti Saṅkhepa. The teacher named Mahāvajirabuddhi made the text named Vinayagaṇṭhi. The teacher named Vimalabuddhi, known as Dīpaṅkara, made the Nyāsa text named Mukhamattadīpanī. The teacher named Cullavajirabuddhi made the text named Atthabyākhyāna. The teacher named Dīpaṅkara made three kinds of texts: the Rūpasiddhi text, the Rūpasiddhi Ṭīkā, and the Sampapañca Sutta. The teacher named Dhammapāla, the elder disciple of Ānanda, made the text named Saccasaṅkhepa. The teacher named Kassapa made four kinds of texts: Mohavicchedanī, Vimaticchedanī, Dasabuddhavaṃsa, and Anāgatavaṃsa. The teacher named Mahānāma made the commentary on the Paṭisambhidāmagga named Saddhammapakāsanī. These six texts: Dīpavaṃsa, Thūpavaṃsa, Bodhivaṃsa, Cūlavaṃsa, Mahāvaṃsa, and the Paṭisambhidāmaggaṭṭhakathā Gaṇṭhi, were made separately by the teacher Mahānāma. The teacher named Nava Mahānāma made the new text named Nava Mahāvaṃsa. The teacher named Upasena made the commentary on the Mahāniddesa named Saddhammapajjotikā. The teacher named Moggalāna made the text named Moggalānabyākaraṇa. The teacher named Saṅgharakkhita made the text named Subodhālaṅkāra. The teacher named Vuttodayakāra made the text named Vuttodaya. The teacher named Dhammasiri made the text named Khuddakasikkhā. These two texts: the Ṭīkā on the Purāṇakhuddasikkhā, and Mūlasikkhā, were made separately by two teachers. The teacher named Anuruddha made Paramatthavinicchaya, Nāmarūpapariccheda, Abh And the Abhidhammatthasaṅgaha, thus he made three kinds of treatises. The teacher named Khema made a treatise named Khema. The teacher named Sāriputta made a commentary named Sāratthadīpanī on the Vinayaṭṭhakathā; the treatise Vinayasaṅgaha, a commentary on the Vinayasaṅgaha; a new commentary named Sāratthamañjūsā on the Aṅguttaraṭṭhakathā; and a Pañcikā commentary; these five texts he made. The teacher named Buddhanāga made a commentary named Vinayatthamañjūsā on the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī. The teacher named Navo Moggalāna made a treatise named Abhidhānappadīpikā. The teacher named Vācissara made a commentary named Mahāsāmi on the Subodhālaṅkāra, a Vuttodaya Vivaraṇa, a commentary named Sumaṅgalappasādanī on the Khuddasikkhā; the Sambandhacintā, a commentary on the Sambandhacintā; the Bālāvatāra, a Pañcikā commentary on the Moggalānabyākaraṇa; the Yogavinicchaya, a commentary on the Vinayavinicchaya, a commentary on the Uttaravinicchaya, a Vibhāga on the Nāmarūpa-pariccheda, a Padarūpavibhāvana on the Saddattha; a commentary on Khema's treatise, the Sīmālaṅkāra, a commentary on the Mūlasikkhā, the Rūpavibhāga, the Paccayasaṅgaha, and a commentary on the Saccasaṅkhepa; these eighteen texts he made. The teacher named Sumaṅgala made two kinds of treatises: a commentary on the Abhidhammāvatāra, and a commentary on the Abhidhammatthasaṅgaha. The teacher named Buddhapiya made a treatise named Sāratthasaṅgaha. The teacher named Dhammakitti made the Dantadhātu treatise. The teacher named Medhaṅkara made a treatise named Jinacarita. The teacher named Buddharakkhita made two kinds of treatises: the Jinalaṅkāra, and a commentary on the Jinalaṅkāra. The teacher named Upatissa made an Aṭṭhakathā on the Anāgatavaṃsa. The Līnatthappakāsinī on the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī, the Nisandeha, the Dhammānusāraṇī, the Ñeyyāsantati, a commentary on the Ñeyyāsantati, the Sumatādāvatāra, the Lokapaññatti treatise, the Tathāgatuppatti treatise, the Nalāṭadhātu Vaṇṇanā, the Sīhaḷavatthu, the Dhammadīpaka, the Paṭipattisaṅgaha, the Vis Uddhimagga Gaṇṭhi, Abhidhamma Gaṇṭhi, Nettipakaraṇa Gaṇṭhi, Visuddhimagga Cullanavaṭīkā, Sotabbamālinī, Pasādajananī, Okāsaloko, and the new commentary on Subodhālaṅkāra— these twenty texts were made distinctly by twenty teachers. The teacher named Saddhammasiri made a text named Saddatthabhedacintā. The teacher named Deva made a text named Sumana Kūṭavaṇṇana. The teacher named Cullabuddhaghosa made a text named Sotatthakinidāna. The teacher named Raṭṭhapāla made a text named Madhurasaṅgāhaṇīkitti. The teacher named Subhūtacanda made a text named Liṅgatthavivaraṇa. The teacher named Aggavaṃsa made a text named Saddanīti. The teacher named Vajirabuddhi made a commentary on the Nyāsa text, named Mahāṭīkā. The teacher named Guṇasāgara made two kinds of texts: Mukhamattasāra, and a commentary on Mukhamattasāra. The teacher named Abhaya made a great commentary on Saddatthabhedacintā. The teacher named Ñāṇasāgara made a text named Liṅgatthavivaraṇappakāsana. Another teacher made two kinds of texts: Gūḷatthaṭīkā, and Bālappabodhana. Another teacher made a middle commentary on Saddatthabhedacintā. The teacher named Uttama made two kinds of texts: Bālāvatāraṭīkā, and Liṅgatthavivaraṇaṭīkā. Another teacher made a new commentary on Saddatthabhedacintā. One minister made three kinds of texts: a commentary on Abhidhānappadīpikā; a commentary on Gaṇṭhipakaraṇa and Daṇḍīppakaraṇa, which was in Māgadha language; and a commentary made in the language of the Koladdha people. The teacher named Dhammasenāpati made three kinds of texts: Kārikā, Etimāsapidīpanī, and Manohāra. Another teacher made a commentary on Kārikā. Another teacher made a commentary on Etimāsapidīpikā. Another teacher made a text named Saddabindu. The teacher named Saddhammaguru made a text named Saddavuttippakāsaka. Yes. The teacher named Sāriputta made a commentary on the Saddavuttippakāsaka. Another teacher made two kinds of works: a work called Kaccāyanasāra and a commentary on Kaccāyanasāra. The teacher named Navo Medhaṅkaro made a work called Lokadīpakasāra. The teacher named Aggapaṇḍita made a work called Lokuppatti. The teacher named Cīvara made a commentary on Jaṅghadāsaka. The teacher Saddhammajotipāla made these eight texts: Mātikatthadīpanī, Abhidhammatthasaṅgahavaṇṇanā, Sīmālaṅkārassaṭīkā, Vinayasamuṭṭhānadīpanī ṭīkā, Gaṇṭhi Sāro, Paṭṭhānagaṇanā Nayo, Suttaniddeso, and Pātimokkho. The teacher named Vimalabuddhi made a work called Abhidhamma-pannarasaṭṭhāna. The teacher named Navo Vimalabuddhi made these six texts: Saddasāratthajālinī, a commentary on Saddasāratthajālinī, a commentary on Vuttodaya, Paramatthamañjūsā, which is a sub-commentary on the Abhidhammasaṅgaha commentary, Dasagaṇṭhivaṇṇanā, and Māgadhabhūtāvidaggamukhamaṇḍanaṭīkā. Another teacher made a new sub-commentary on the Pañcapakaraṇaṭīkā. The teacher named Ariyavaṃsa made a new sub-commentary on the Abhidhammasaṅgaha commentary, called [Paramattha] Maṇisāramañjūsā. These twenty texts were made by various teachers: a commentary on Abhidhammatthasaṅgaha, a commentary on Peṭakopadesa, an Aṭṭhakathā on Catubhāṇavāra, Mahāsārapakāsanī, Mahādīpanī, Sāratthadīpanī Gati Pakaraṇa, Hatthasāro, Bhummasaṅgaho, Bhummaniddeso, Dasavatthukāyaviratiṭīkā, Jotanā Nirutti, Vibhattikathā, Kaccāyanavivaraṇā, Saddhammamālinī, Pañcagati Vaṇṇanā, Bālacittapabodhanaṃ, a new Aṭṭhakathā on Dhammacakkasutta, and a commentary on Dantadhātu Pakaraṇa. And there are other works. Which are they? Saddhammo Pāyano, a commentary on Bālappabodhanapakaraṇa, a new commentary on Jinālaṅkārapakaraṇa, Liṅgatthavivaraṇaṃ, Liṅgavinicchayo, Pātimokkha The Vivaraṇa, the Paramatthakatthāvivaraṇa, the Samantapāsādikāvivaraṇa, the Catubhāṇavāraṭṭhakathāvivaraṇa, the Abhidhammatthasaṅgahavivaraṇa, the Saccasaṅkhepavivaraṇa, the Saddatthabhedacintāvivaraṇa, the Saddavuttivivaraṇa, the Kaccāyanasāravivaraṇa, the Abhidhammatthasaṅgahassa ṭīkāvivaraṇa, the Mahāvessantarājātakassa vivaraṇa, the Sakkābhimata, the Mahāvessantarajātaka's Navaṭṭhakathā, the Paṭhama Saṃbodhi, and the Lokanetti, the Buddhaghosācariya Nidāna, the Milindapañhā Vaṇṇanā, the Caturā Rakkhā, the Caturakkhāya Aṭṭhakathā, the Saddavuttipakaraṇassa Navaṭīkā— thus, twenty-five such treatises were made by scholars in places like the island of Laṅkā. And the Sambuddhe Gāthā, and the Naradeva Gāthā, and the Dātave Cīratti Gāthā, and the Vīsati Ovādagāthā, and the Dānasattari, the Sīlasattari, the Sappādānavaṇṇanā, and the Anantabuddhavandanagāthā, and the Aṭṭhavīsati Buddhavandanagāthā, and the Atītānāgatapaccuppannavandanagāthā, and the Asītimahāsāvakavandanagāthā, and the Navahāraguṇavaṇṇanā— these Buddha-homage verses and so forth were made by scholars in places like the island of Laṅkā. Chapter on the Birthplaces of the Teachers Among the teachers, there are teachers from Jambudīpa, and there are teachers from Laṅkādīpa. Who are the teachers from Jambudīpa? Who are the teachers from Laṅkādīpa? Mahākaccāyana is a teacher from Jambudīpa. He, having been the chief priest of King Candapajjota in the city of Ujjenī in the Avanti country, seeing the danger in sensual pleasures, abandoned household life, and, having gone forth in the Teacher's Dispensation, made the treatises mentioned above. The Mahāaṭṭhakathācariya is from Jambudīpa, the Mahāpaccarikācariya, the Mahākurundikācariya, and other teachers, two of them— these are the ancient teachers. The teachers called Laṅkādīpika are those who existed before the time of the teacher Buddhaghosa. They were. The great teacher Buddhaghosa was from Jambudīpa. He, it is said, was the son of a brahmin named Kesi, the king's chaplain, in the village of Ghosaka in the Magadha kingdom. Having gone forth into the Teacher's Dispensation,
