Answer: Furthermore, monks, a monk reflects on this very body, from the soles of the feet upwards, from the top of the hair downwards, enclosed by skin, full of various impurities: "There are in this body hair, body-hair, nails, teeth, skin..." In this way, venerable sir, the Blessed One has explained and elucidated the contemplation of the body in terms of repulsiveness. Question: And how, friend, has the Blessed One explained and elucidated the contemplation of the body in terms of elements? Answer: Furthermore, monks, a monk reflects on this very body, however it is placed, however it is disposed, in terms of its elements: "There are in this body the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the air element." In this way, venerable sir, the Blessed One has explained and elucidated the contemplation of the body in terms of elements. Question: And how, friend, has the Blessed One explained and elucidated the contemplation of the body in terms of the nine charnel ground contemplations? is taught. Answer – Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu might see a body discarded in a charnel ground, dead for one day, or two days, or three days, bloated, discolored, festering. He applies this very body to himself: “This body too is of such a nature, will become like that, is not exempt from that.” In this way, venerable sir, there the Blessed One taught and expounded the nine charnel ground contemplations of the body. Question – And how, friend, there was the contemplation of feelings taught and expounded by the Blessed One? Answer – Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu experiencing a pleasant feeling understands: “I experience a pleasant feeling.” Experiencing a painful feeling understands: “I experience a painful feeling.” Experiencing a neither-pleasant-nor-painful feeling understands: “I experience a neither-pleasant-nor-painful feeling.” In this way, venerable sir, there the Blessed One taught and expounded the contemplation of feelings. Question – And how, friend, there was the contemplation of mind taught and expounded by the Blessed One? Answer – Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu knows a mind with lust as “a mind with lust.” Knows a mind without lust as “a mind without lust.” Knows a mind with hate or without hate, with delusion or without delusion, knows a constricted mind as “a constricted mind.” Knows a scattered mind as “a scattered mind.” In this way, there the Blessed One taught and expounded the contemplation of mind. Question – And how, friend, there was the contemplation of phenomena taught and expounded by the Blessed One? Answer that briefly. Answer – Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena, in the five hindrances, in this way, venerable sir, there the Blessed One taught and expounded the contemplation of phenomena in five sections. Answer – In Vesālī, venerable sir, it was spoken concerning Sunakkhatta, the Licchavi's son. Sunakkhatta, venerable sir, the Licchavi's son, had recently departed from this Dhamma and Discipline. He spoke such words in the assembly in Vesālī: "There is no superhuman Dhamma of the recluse Gotama, no distinction of noble knowledge and vision. The recluse Gotama teaches a Dhamma that is hammered out by reasoning, followed by investigation, self-devised. And for the purpose for which his Dhamma is taught, it does not lead to the complete ending of suffering for one who practices it." Venerable Sāriputta, venerable sir, reported this matter to the Blessed One. It was spoken concerning that matter, venerable sir. Question – How many, friend, were there by the Blessed One the Tathāgata's powers of a Tathāgata, explained and declared, endowed with which powers the Tathāgata claims the foremost place, roars his lion's roar in assemblies, and sets rolling the wheel of Brahma? Answer – Ten, venerable sir, are the Tathāgata's powers of a Tathāgata, explained and declared by the Blessed One, endowed with which powers the Tathāgata claims the foremost place, roars his lion's roar in assemblies, and sets rolling the wheel of Brahma. Question – And how, friend, were there by the Blessed One the four kinds of intrepid knowledge, explained and declared, endowed with which intrepidities the Tathāgata claims the foremost place, roars his lion's roar in assemblies, and sets rolling the wheel of Brahma? Answer – To one who claims to have destroyed the taints, "These taints are not destroyed" — in that regard... Alas, no ascetic or brahmin, no god or Māra, or Brahmā, or anyone in the world, will rightly challenge me on this teaching. This sign, Sāriputta, I do not perceive. Not perceiving this sign, Sāriputta, I dwell having attained security, having attained fearlessness, having attained confidence. In this way, venerable sir, the Lord extensively expounded and revealed the four knowledges of confidence there. Question – And how, friend, did the Lord there expound and reveal the knowledge of the distinction of the five destinations? Answer – Indeed, Sāriputta, these are five destinations. Which five? Hell, the animal realm, the realm of hungry ghosts, humans, devas. In this way, venerable sir, the Lord there expounded and revealed the knowledge of the distinction of the five destinations. Question – And how, friend, did the Tathāgata there declare the non-decline of his own wisdom and skill? Answer – Indeed, Sāriputta, there are some ascetics and brahmins who hold such views, who hold such doctrines, that as long as this good man is young... In this way, venerable sir, the Tathāgata there declared the non-decline of his own wisdom and skill. The Greater Discourse on the Mass of Suffering Question – And where, friend, concerning whom, and on what occasion was the Greater Discourse on the Mass of Suffering spoken by the Lord? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was spoken concerning other sectarians. Many other sectarian monastics, venerable sir, said this: ‘Friend Gotama the ascetic teaches the full understanding of sensual pleasures. We too teach the full understanding of sensual pleasures. Friend Gotama the ascetic teaches the full understanding of forms and feelings. We too teach the full understanding of forms and feelings. So what, friend, is the difference for us, what is the distinction, what is the dissimilarity between ascetic Gotama and us, regarding this teaching or instruction?’ The bhikkhus reported this matter to the Lord. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was spoken. The Shorter Discourse on the Mass of Suffering Question – The Shorter Discourse on Suffering... Now, friend, where was the Khandha Sutta spoken by the Blessed One, concerning whom, and on what occasion? Answer: It was spoken, venerable sir, among the Sakyans, in Kapilavatthu, concerning Mahānāma the Sakyan. Mahānāma the Sakyan, venerable sir, approached the Blessed One and said this: "For a long time, venerable sir, I have known the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One in this way: 'Greed is an defilement of the mind, hatred is an defilement of the mind, delusion is an defilement of the mind.' And I know the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One in this way: 'Greed is an defilement of the mind, hatred is an defilement of the mind, delusion is an defilement of the mind.' Yet sometimes, the states of greed overwhelm my mind, the states of hatred overwhelm my mind, the states of delusion overwhelm my mind. Then, venerable sir, it occurs to me: 'What Dhamma within me is not abandoned, by which sometimes the states of greed overwhelm my mind, the states of hatred overwhelm my mind, the states of delusion overwhelm my mind?'"
