in bamboo groves, etc.," even so, bones do not know, "The marrow is inside us." Nor does marrow know, "I am inside the bones." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness. Thus, bone-marrow in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, soulless, stiff, an earth element. 320. The kidneys, emerging from the throat, go a short distance with a single root, then split into two, and are bound by thick tendons, enclosing the heart muscle. There, just as in two mango fruits attached to a stem, the stem does not know, "I have attached the two mango fruits." Nor do the two mango fruits know, "I am attached by the stem," even so, the thick tendons do not know, "I have attached the kidneys." Nor do the kidneys know, "I am attached by the thick tendons." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness. Thus, the kidney in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, soulless, stiff, an earth element. 321. The heart is situated inside the body, resting against the middle of the rib cage. There, just as in a piece of flesh placed against an old birdcage, the inside of the birdcage does not know, "A piece of flesh is resting against me." Nor does the piece of flesh know, "I am resting against an old birdcage," even so, the inside of the rib cage does not know, "The heart is resting against me." Nor does the heart know, "I am resting against the rib cage." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness. Thus, the heart in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, soulless, stiff, an earth element. 322. The liver is inside the body, situated on the right side between the two breasts. There, just as the twin pieces of flesh stuck to the side of a cooking pot The side of the cooking pot does not know, 'A twin lump of meat is attached to me.' Nor does the twin lump of meat know, 'I am attached to the side of the cooking pot.' Even so, the right side within the chest does not know, 'The liver is situated relying on me.' Nor does the liver know, 'I am situated relying on the right side within the chest.' These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the liver in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, without a living being, solid, the earth element. 323. Among the membranes, the covered membrane is situated surrounding the heart and kidneys. The uncovered membrane is situated throughout the entire body, enveloping the flesh beneath the skin. Therein, just as in flesh wrapped in a cloth, the flesh does not know, 'I am wrapped by the cloth.' Nor does the cloth know, 'The flesh is wrapped by me.' Even so, the kidneys and heart, and the flesh throughout the entire body, do not know, 'I am covered by the membrane.' Nor does the membrane know, 'The kidneys and heart, and the flesh throughout the entire body, are covered by me.' These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the membrane in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, without a living being, solid, the earth element. 324. The spleen is situated on the left side of the heart, relying on the upper part of the abdominal membrane. Therein, just as with a lump of cow dung situated relying on the upper part of a granary, the upper part of the granary does not know, 'A lump of cow dung is situated relying on me.' Nor does the lump of cow dung know, 'I am situated relying on the upper part of the granary.' Even so, the upper part of the abdominal membrane does not know, 'The spleen is situated relying on me.' Nor does the spleen know, 'I am situated relying on the upper part of the abdominal membrane.' These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the spleen in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, unmanifested, empty, without a living being, solid, the earth element. 325. The lungs are within the body, between the two breasts, covering the heart and liver, hanging down. Just as in an old hollow tree, a bird's nest hangs, the old hollow tree does not know, "A bird's nest hangs in me." Nor does the bird's nest know, "I hang in an old hollow tree." Even so, the body does not know, "The lungs hang in me." Nor do the lungs know, "I hang in such a body." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness or reflection. Thus, the lungs in this body are a distinct part, unconscious, unmanifested, empty, without a living being, solid, the earth element. 326. The intestines are within the body, from the throat opening to the end of the feces passage. Just as a headless, vein-cut corpse is placed in a blood basin, the blood basin does not know, "A vein-cut corpse is in me." Nor does the vein-cut corpse know, "I am in a blood basin." Even so, the body does not know, "The intestines are in me." Nor do the intestines know, "I am in the body." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness or reflection. Thus, the intestines in this body are a distinct part, unconscious, unmanifested, empty, without a living being, solid, the earth element. 327. The mesentery is within the intestines, binding the twenty-one coils of the intestines. Just as a foot-wiping rope mat is woven into ropes, the foot-wiping rope mat does not know, "The ropes have woven me." Nor do the ropes know, "We have woven the foot-wiping rope mat." Even so, the intestines do not know, "The mesentery has bound me." Nor does the mesentery know, "I have bound the intestines." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness or reflection. Hmm. Thus, the intestinal coils, in this body, are a distinct part, unconscious, morally neutral, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. Undigested food, in the stomach located, that which is eaten, drunk, chewed, tasted. Just as when in a dog's trough is dog's vomit, the dog's trough does not know: "Dog's vomit is in me." Nor does the dog's vomit know: "I am in the dog's trough." Even so, the stomach does not know: "Undigested food is in me." Nor does the undigested food know: "I am in the stomach." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, undigested food, in this body, is a distinct part, unconscious, morally neutral, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. Feces, in the lower intestines, like an eight-finger-jointed bamboo node, located at the end of the intestines. Just as when in a bamboo node fine yellow clay has been pressed in and placed, the bamboo node does not know: "Yellow clay is in me." Nor does the yellow clay know: "I am in the bamboo node." Even so, the lower intestines do not know: "Feces are in me." Nor do the feces know: "I am in the lower intestines." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, feces, in this body, are a distinct part, unconscious, morally neutral, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. Brain-matter, inside the skull located. Just as when in an old gourd-bowl a ball of dough has been placed, the gourd-bowl does not know: "A ball of dough is in me." Nor does the ball of dough know: "I am in the gourd-bowl." Even so, the inside of the skull does not know: "Brain-matter is in me." Nor does the brain-matter know: "I am inside the skull." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, brain-matter, in this body, is a distinct part, unconscious, morally neutral, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. Among the bile, the unbound bile, connected with the life faculty... ...pervading the entire body. Bound bile is in the bile-sac. Just as when oil pervades a cake, the cake does not know, "Oil pervades me." Nor does the oil know, "I pervade the cake." Even so, the body does not know, "Unbound bile pervades me." Nor does unbound bile know, "I pervade the body." Just as when a bitter gourd pod is full of rainwater, the bitter gourd pod does not know, "Rainwater is in me." Nor does the rainwater know, "I am in the bitter gourd pod." Even so, the bile-sac does not know, "Bound bile is in me." Nor does bound bile know, "I am in the bile-sac." These phenomena lack mutual awareness or reflection. Thus, bile, in this body, is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, without essence, like juice, a binding agent, the water element. 332. Phlegm, about one *pattha* measure, is in the stomach lining. Just as when a layer of foam forms on a pot of rice gruel, the pot of rice gruel does not know, "A layer of foam is in me." Nor does the layer of foam know, "I am in the pot of rice gruel." Even so, the stomach lining does not know, "Phlegm is in me." Nor does phlegm know, "I am in the stomach lining." These phenomena lack mutual awareness or reflection. Thus, phlegm, in this body, is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, without essence, like juice, a binding agent, the water element. 333. Pus has no fixed place. Wherever the body is struck by a stake, a thorn, a blow, a flame of fire, or the like, and blood collects and putrefies, or boils and sores arise, there it is found. Just as when sap oozes from a tree due to an axe blow or the like, the struck parts of the tree do not know, "Sap is in us." Nor does the sap know, "I am in the struck parts of the tree." Even so, the body's... Places afflicted by splinters, thorns, and so on, know that pus is in them. Nor does pus know, "I am in those places." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, pus in this body is a distinct part, unconscious, indeterminate, empty, without a living being, like a juice, a binding agent, a water element. 334.Among bloods, circulating blood, like bile, remains pervading the entire body. Accumulated blood, filling the lower part of the liver region, about one *pattha* full, remains moistening the kidneys, heart, liver, and lungs. There, regarding circulating blood, the determination is similar to unattached bile. But as for the other, just as when water is poured into a broken pot, and the clods of earth below are moistened, the clods of earth do not know,
