Here, "with painful feeling" means the three feelings: two painful mental feelings associated with mind of aversion, and painful bodily feeling associated with body-consciousness; and the mental states associated with them, and the six undesirable sense objects, beginning with form, are the place where the latent tendency to aversion lies latent, both in terms of co-arising and in terms of sense object, as appropriate. But are the other two feelings not sense objects of aversion, or desirable sense objects? No, they are not. For when the desirable meditation of one who has declined from jhāna is lost, displeasure arises in dependence on that meditation together with its associated mental states, but that is only a sense object, not a place where the latent tendency lies latent, because it is desirable. Only the undesirable is the cause of aversion because it is the opposite of the desirable, but the aversion that arises there is only aversion, not the latent tendency to aversion. For the latent tendency to aversion is a defilement that has become strong, arising in the undesirable sense object in the manner of aversion, but the other, even though it arises together with displeasure, is not the latent tendency to aversion because it does not perform its function of aversion, it goes to the state of being unexpressed. Just as even though ill will arises together with the volition to kill, it is not called mental action, it goes to the state of being unexpressed, so it should be understood. Therefore, displeasure based on renunciation is said to be cultivated. But for the latent tendency to conceit, all mundane phenomena, except painful feeling and displeasure, are the place where it lies latent. For it is said, "In painful feeling, which is not pervasive...the latent tendency to conceit does not lie latent." But for the latent tendency to wrong view and the latent tendency to doubt, all phenomena except the supramundane are the place where they lie latent. Therefore, it is said, "In all phenomena pervasive of the existing aggregate." There, "in all phenomena pervasive of the existing aggregate" means in all phenomena in the sense of being based on the round of existence. Thus, And the underlying tendency to ignorance should also be understood. And everywhere, the distinction between co-arisen and object-based should be understood in the manner stated below. However, the underlying tendency to craving for existence, although it should be said to underlie in the two feelings in the desire realm in terms of co-arising, since it arises in the four minds disassociated from views in the desire realm, yet since it only obtains an object that belongs to the form and formless realms, and not only an object that belongs to the desire realm, and that is not a place for underlying tendencies to underlie, therefore, without making a rule in terms of object, it is said, "In the form realm, in the formless realm, the underlying tendency to craving for existence underlies." In terms of that craving, all that craving should be taken as the underlying tendency to sensual craving, this is the method in the place-of-arising section. However, in the other seven great sections, "Does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to aversion underlie in them?" "Yes." "Or does the underlying tendency to aversion underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in them?" "Yes." "Does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to conceit underlie in them?" "Yes." "Or does the underlying tendency to conceit underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in them?" "The underlying tendency to conceit underlies in a non-returner, but the underlying tendency to sensual craving does not underlie in them; the underlying tendency to conceit underlies, and the underlying tendency to sensual craving also underlies, in three individuals." "Does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to views underlie in them?" "The underlying tendency to sensual craving underlies in two individuals, but not...etc... the underlying tendency to views also underlies; or does...etc...?" "Yes." "Does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to doubt underlie in them?" In this question too, the answer is similar to the underlying tendency to views. "Does the underlying tendency to sensual craving underlie in whomever, does the underlying tendency to craving for existence underlie in them?" "Yes." "Or does...etc... underlie in whomever...etc...?" "...the underlying tendency to craving for existence underlies, and the underlying tendency to sensual craving also underlies, in three individuals." The same method applies to the underlying tendency to ignorance. By this method, the way of answering in questions based on the underlying tendency to aversion, etc., should be understood. This is the method with a single root. Does the underlying tendency to sensual craving and... And does the tendency to aversion lie latent, does the tendency to conceit lie latent in him? Yes. But for the two, of two roots… …for the five, of five roots, the method of answering should be understood according to the way it was stated for the one root. Here is the application for the last tendency: "In whom the tendency to sensual lust, and the tendency to aversion, and the tendency to conceit, and the tendency to views, and the tendency to doubt, and the tendency to craving for existence lie latent, does the tendency to ignorance lie latent in him?" Yes. "Or in whom the tendency to ignorance lies latent, does the tendency to sensual lust… …and the tendency to craving for existence lie latent?" In a non-returner, the tendency to ignorance, and the tendency to conceit, and the tendency to craving for existence lie latent, but not the others. In two types of individuals, the tendency to ignorance, and the tendencies to sensual lust, aversion, conceit, and craving for existence lie latent, but not the tendencies to views and doubt. But in an ordinary person, all lie latent." This is the method in terms of individuals. But in terms of locations: "Where the tendency to sensual lust lies latent, does the tendency to aversion lie latent there?" No. "Or where… …lies latent there?" No. "Where the tendency to sensual lust lies latent, does the tendency to conceit lie latent there?" Yes. "Or where the tendency to conceit lies latent, does the tendency to sensual lust lie latent there?" In the realm of form, in the formless realm, there the tendency to conceit lies latent, but not the tendency to sensual lust. In the realm of desire, in two feelings, both lie latent. "Where the tendency to sensual lust… …lies latent, does the tendency to doubt lie latent there?" Yes. "Or where… …lies latent there?" In painful feeling, in the realm of form, in the formless realm, there the tendency to doubt lies latent, but not the tendency to sensual lust. In the realm of desire, in two feelings, both lie latent. "Where the tendency to sensual lust… …lies latent, does the tendency to craving for existence lie latent there?" No. "Or where… …no. "Where the tendency to sensual lust lies latent, does the tendency to ignorance lie latent there?" Yes. "Or where… …lies latent there?" In painful feeling, in the realm of form and the formless realm, there the tendency to ignorance lies latent, but not the tendency to sensual lust. In the realm of desire, in two feelings, both lie latent. Where the underlying tendency to aversion lies latent, does the underlying tendency to conceit lie latent there? No. Wherever else, however…pe… No. Where the underlying tendency to aversion lies latent, do the underlying tendency to views and the underlying tendency to doubt lie latent there? Yes. Wherever else, however…pe… lies latent there? In the Sensual Realm, in two feelings, in the Form and Formless Realms, there the underlying tendency to doubt lies latent, but not the underlying tendency to aversion; but in painful feeling, both lie latent. Where the underlying tendency to aversion lies latent, does the underlying tendency to craving for existence lie latent there? No. Wherever else, however…pe… No. Where the underlying tendency to aversion lies latent, does the underlying tendency to ignorance lie latent there? Yes. Wherever else, however…pe… lies latent there…pe… in painful feeling, both lie latent, elsewhere, only the underlying tendency to ignorance. Where the underlying tendency to conceit lies latent, do the underlying tendency to views and the underlying tendency to doubt lie latent there? Yes. Wherever else, however…pe… lies latent there? In painful feeling, only the underlying tendency to views, not the other; elsewhere, in all places, it lies latent. Where the underlying tendency to conceit lies latent, does the underlying tendency to craving for existence lie latent there? In the Sensual Realm, in two feelings, only the underlying tendency to conceit, not the other; but in the Form and Formless Realms, both lie latent. Wherever else, however…pe… Yes. Where the underlying tendency to conceit lies latent, does the underlying tendency to ignorance…pe… Yes. Wherever else, however…pe… lies latent there? Except for painful feeling, in all other places, both lie latent. Where the underlying tendency to views lies, does the underlying tendency to doubt…pe… Yes. Where the underlying tendency to views lies, does the underlying tendency to craving for existence lie latent there? In the Sensual Realm, in three feelings, only the underlying tendency to views; in the Form and Formless existences, both lie latent. Wherever else, however…pe… Yes. Where the underlying tendency to views lies latent, does the underlying tendency to ignorance…pe… Yes.
