English
five, five, three, four, three, one, thus. In pre-arisen: eleven, three, four, two. In second and third root-pairs: one, one, thus. Likewise in repetition. Other enumerations are like root and object. 31. In the negative, regarding the non-dominance condition, in the first question, having said, "Dependent on thoughtless and investigative aggregates, thoughtless and investigative are dominant," the answer was given again, beginning with, "Dependent on one thoughtless and investigative resultant aggregate," but not in general. Why? Because thoughtless and investigative aggregates, excluding resultants, are always dominant. But for resultants, only the supramundane are dominant, not others. Therefore, they are stated separately. The supramundane resultant dominance here should be understood as included in the former section. 38. In the non-repetition root, by connecting this root, "thoughtless and investigative going with resultant," with the terms "thoughtless and investigative" and "thoughtless," it is said that the Pāli text should proceed like the non-pre-arisen. Similarity here and dissimilarity should mostly be seen. For there, "thoughtless and investigative in the formless realms," here, "thoughtless and investigative resultant," and so on, should be connected. This is the distinction here. This should be written after the analysis of non-repetition, not after jhānas, as written in some books. In the condition section, in the first combination, it is said that in all seven questions of the first root-pair, occurrence and rebirth-linking should be combined. 49. In the negative, in seven places, seven delusions should be removed. This means that in the root terms themselves, in those seven questions where the root term is combined as the final part in terms like "with thought and investigation," seven delusions should be removed. In the negative of the question section, "A thoughtless and investigative phenomenon is a condition for a thoughtless and investigative phenomenon by way of object, co-arisen, decisive support, and kamma conditions" in some books... The reading is seen, but because it is included by way of decisive support, it cannot be said, "It is a condition by way of kamma-condition." Indeed, in the reverse section of the question-chapter on the triad of "grasped," it is said only this much: "The ungrasped and not-to-be-grasped phenomenon is a condition for the ungrasped and not-to-be-grasped phenomenon by way of conascence-decisive support condition." (Paṭṭhāna 1.4.58, 62) And in the reverse section of the question-chapter on the triad of "limited," it is said only this much: "The exalted phenomenon is a condition for the exalted phenomenon by way of object-conascence-decisive support condition." (Paṭṭhāna 2.12.57, 65, 73) And it is understood by these very statements that kamma, which is only without initial application and sustained application, is immeasurable and exalted, and that it is not weak. The exposition of the triad of initial application is finished. 8. The exposition of the triad of "to be abandoned by seeing." In the triad of "to be abandoned by seeing," the phenomenon to be abandoned by seeing is not a condition for the phenomenon to be abandoned by development by even one condition. This should be investigated in the manner investigated in the analysis of dependent origination. The exposition of the triad of "to be abandoned by seeing" is finished. Verses on the counting of questions Wholesome and so on, the single triad, then with the end, with the middle end; And the beginning, with the middle, the dyads, three, and the single triad should be known. Making each of these a root, those questions are seven times seven; As for each condition, they become forty-nine. One hundred and seventy-six, and one thousand questions in the pure; This is the method in the direct order, and in the reverse order, not elsewhere. A quantity multiplied by half of that quantity, together with the quantity; Or half of the quantity plus one, again multiplied by the quantity. Thus, the dyads and triads, etc., based on roots and causes, are two hundred and thirty-six; Here are twenty-four questions, and one hundred and fifty thousand. Since for these, the pure method is not in each individual condition, therefore; This is the calculation for those with the pure method, multiplied by twenty-four. Three hundred thousand, two myriads, five thousand, and seven hundred; Fifty-two, these are the questions summed up in the direct order. Calculation similar to the direct order. Ah, there are questions in the interrogative and negative methods; Having omitted the rest, the pure ones are obtained in both methods. There are fifty-six questions, and thirteen hundred thousand plus six hundred; Counted in the interrogative methods, in all four rounds of Dependent Origination. Multiplied by seven in the wholesome triad, two hundred and ninety-five; And four thousand, and one hundred ninety thousand. Not multiplied by twenty-two, in all triads twenty crores; Three hundred thousand, and twenty-four thousand should be known. Triad Paṭṭhāna. In the single factor, making nine and nine, two hundred and sixteen; In the first round of the root-duka, pure questions in the first method. In each of the root-beginning methods, with divisions of dukas and so on; Two thousand four hundred and eighty-four questions. Those multiplied by twenty-four, with their pure ones, are in the direct order; Nine thousand eight hundred and thirty-two thousand. Thus in the negative, two, without their pure ones, are from the four; Two hundred and thirty-eight thousand eight hundred and ninety-six. Those multiplied by seven, two, two hundred and thirty-seven thousand; Seventy-two, then sixteen hundred thousand in the root-duka. Those multiplied by a hundred in the duka-hundred, two hundred and twenty-seven thousand; Seventy-two hundred thousand, then sixteen crores of questions. Duka Paṭṭhāna. In the duka-tika Paṭṭhāna, a tika is added to each duka; By its sixty-six multiplier, there are one hundred and sixty-six dukas. The questions obtained in the root-duka, multiplied by those, become the tika-term; The questions in the duka Paṭṭhāna, their calculation should be known thus. Fifty-two hundred, and nine nahutas and ninety; And three hundred thousand, a hundred thousand and crores. Duka-tika Paṭṭhāna. In the tika-duka Paṭṭhāna, each tika is divided into two hundred parts; Multiplied by two hundred and twenty-two, obtained in the wholesome triad, should be known. Questions of two hundred and four thousand eight hundred; Six crores, and four thousand crores. Tika-duka The Patthana. In the Patthana of Triads, the triads are each divided in sixty-three ways; And multiplied by these, the questions of the wholesome triad become these questions. Five hundred and twelve, sixty-four thousands, and eighty-nine; sixty-one lakhs, and twelve hundred crores. The Patthana of Triads. Multiplied by two hundred less two, each in the Patthana of Dyads; And the questions, obtained in the Hetu-Duka, are multiplied by the types of numbers. Six hundreds, eighty-five thousands, and nine lakhs; And eleven crores, again thirty-three hundred crores. The Patthana of Dyads. The questions, when summed up, in all six types of Patthana in direct order, are three million six hundred seventy thousand and eight, forty-six lakhs, and then ten crores, and seven hundred crores, nine thousand crores there are. Those questions, multiplied by four, in the fourfold comprehensive Patthana; Are thirteen thousand, three hundred and forty-four, and eighty-seven lakhs, and seventy-seven crores; There are three million, eight hundred, this is the calculation. Verses on the Calculation of Questions in the Patthana. The Root Commentary on the Patthana Treatise is concluded. Thus, the explanation of obscure terms, made by the Venerable Acariya Ananda, the Root Commentary on the Abhidhamma, is concluded.
