"So" refers to Pasūra the wanderer. "By him" means by the Elder Udāyi. "In accordance with the Dhamma" means with the Dhamma as the reason. "Skilled" is indeed of the characteristic mentioned before, but how is "capable" to be known? He says, "whoever," and so on. The connection is "whoever is able." "Ca" means truly. "This" refers to being capable, or the statement "with five... and so on... to discipline." 77. "Those who have gone over to the side of the sectarians" means those who have gone over to the opposing side of the teaching, called the sectarians. "Teaching good conduct and proper behavior" means teaching the Abhisamācārika precepts, which are to be observed very carefully. By this, it shows the meaning of the word "teacher" as "one who teaches conduct." "Merely a name" means merely the name "teacher" or "pupil." "Different" means different from the preceptor or the fellow student. 20. The Story of Salutation and Non-Forgiveness 80. The connection is "the characteristic that was stated." The construction is "to be done by the pupil under reliance." "By pupils for ordination, for higher ordination, and for Dhamma" means by the pupil for ordination, by the pupil for higher ordination, and by the pupil for Dhamma. "Of these" refers to the pupils for ordination, for higher ordination, and for Dhamma. "Among these" refers to these three kinds of pupils. "Of the teacher" means the pupil for ordination is of the teacher for ordination, and the pupil for higher ordination is of the teacher for higher ordination. "Near" means near the teacher of reliance and the teacher of Dhamma. "Therefore" means because the pupil should behave properly towards the teacher, therefore. "By the teacher also" means the teacher of reliance and the teacher of ordination. Today is the ordination by the Dhamma-teacher. The admonishing teacher is included among them. Among them, that is, among the four pupils. 22. The Story of the Relaxation of Dependence The Decision on the Command "In the relaxations of dependence" is a collective base. "The preceptor has departed," and so on, is a constituent base. "Desirous of going away" shows the state of being unattached. "Having gone thus," is to be connected as: "having gone thus, the preceptor." "At another time too," means at another time as well. The meaning is: "when the preceptor desires to go away." "One enjoyment and use" means one enjoyment of requisites and one use of Dhamma either by oneself or by the preceptor. "Even for one day" the word 'pi' has the sense of blame, meaning that two or more days is even more so. "There is no exemption" means there is no exemption from an offense, the intention is that there is no removal or warding off of an offense. "Conscientious and amiable" is to be connected as: "a bhikkhu who is conscientious and of amiable character." "On that very day" means on that very day the preceptor departed. "Thus" means: just as one asks, "Will the preceptor come back soon?" so it is said, "I will come back soon." "If he says," is to be connected as: "if the teacher says." "Of that bhikkhu." "His nature" means his conscientious and amiable nature. "Until the coming" means until the preceptor's coming. "Him" refers to the preceptor. In the phrase "while causing to dwell," it is a causative object. "There" means at the place where the preceptor has gone. "By him" means by the preceptor. "Proceeding" means the act of proceeding. "Afflicted by a flood" is the connection. Because of a flood, he expects the water to recede; because of affliction by robbers and so on, he seeks companions. "He" refers to the preceptor. "The removal of dependence" shows that by the meaning of the word "command" as "the act of commanding," the removal of dependence is called a command. "The removal of dependence" means the removal of the preceptor or teacher who is the dependence. Therefore, it is connected as: "he is removed." In "by 'having asked,' and so on," the word "and so on" includes "do not ask me about going to the charnel ground," and so on. "By him" means by the co-resident. "Should be appeased" means should be made to endure. So much by the great elders, or first to the great elders. Elsewhere means from the preceptor's monastery to another monastery. Appeva means it may be that it would be tolerated, this is the construction. Tatreva means elsewhere itself. By the fault of famine and so on, here by the word 'etc.' the fault of separation from relatives and so on should be understood. Taṃyeva means that very place dwelt in by oneself. Aññassa means to another monk from the preceptor, this is the connection. Because of being abandoned by this preceptor, it shows that there is no relaxation of dependence in the preceptor's presence. Decision on Presence Āpucchitvā means having asked leave of the pupil. Tatrāpi means even among the teacher's pupils. Kadā means at what time. Sāyanhe vā rattiṃ vā means this evening or tonight. Taṃkhaṇeyeva means at that very moment of acceptance. So ca means and the pupil. Tato means from the village. Sugato means gone well, the meaning is that dependence is relaxed. Athāpi means and furthermore. Having shown the decision regarding departing after asking leave, showing that regarding departing without asking leave, he said, "without asking leave of the teacher" and so on. Upacārasīmātikkame means when there is transgression of the proximity boundary, or due to the cause of transgression, this is the construction. And here the proximity boundary is just the enclosure of an enclosed monastery, and for an unenclosed one, the place worthy of enclosure. Sāyanhe vā rattibhāge vā means this evening or this night part. Sve means tomorrow. Bahisīmaṃ means outside the proximity boundary. Tato means from outside the boundary. Dvinnaṃ leḍḍupātānaṃ means two clod-throws from the pupil. Atikkamitvā means having gone beyond outside the proximity boundary, from the dwelling place of the pupils and co-residents. Muccitukāmo means indeed desiring to be free from the pupil. Paṇāmeti means dismisses by body and speech. Sālayo means dependent on the teacher. Having said "Nirālayo," to show its meaning, it was said "not now" and so on. Evampi means even when the burden is laid down. When there is a laying down of the burden by both, or due to the cause of laying down the burden, it is relaxed, this is the construction. By one who has been dismissed, the paṭip "Ajjitanti" means connection. Expanding on what was said, it states, "If indeed," and so on. "Teacher" refers to the preceptor. Or, "connection" means the preceptor who is worshipping a cetiya, or the preceptor who is on the path. "Dūrattā" means due to being far away. "Uparipāsāde" means on top of the palace. "Taṃ" refers to the preceptor. "Connection" means the preceptor who is seated. "The decision in the reconciliation by hearing should be understood thus," is the connection. "Connection" means the sound of the preceptor. 23. Discourse on the Five Things to be Ordained 84. Now, "connection" means the characteristic that was stated. "Saṅkhepato" means briefly, without extracting the components. "Tattha" refers to what was said, "Monks, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities," and so on. "Aguṇaṅgehi" means with qualities lacking virtue. "So" refers to that bhikkhu. In "Na upasampādetabbaṃ," there might be a doubt that it means "should not ordain by being the reciter of the kammavācā," so it says, "should not ordain by being the preceptor." "Ettha" means among these five. "Ādīsu" here, "pubbo" is for illustration, and the word "iti" is omitted. The meaning is "itiādīsu" (and so on). "Ayuttavasena" means in an inappropriate manner. "Yo" refers to the bhikkhu. "Hī" means indeed, or because. "Pare ca samādapetuṃ" is the connection. "Tattha" refers to the aggregate of morality, and so on. "Pariharati" means he removes the assembly from danger. "Tassa" refers to that bhikkhu. The word "sīlādīhi" is the ablative case for "parihāyatiyevā" (is indeed diminished), and the instrumental case for "na vaḍḍhatī" (does not grow). "Tasmā" and so on, means the acquired quality. "Tena" refers to that bhikkhu. "Why was it not stated in terms of an offense component?" it asks, "Na hī" and so on. "Hī" means because. "Tasseva" means of the Arahant himself. "Na vadeyya" means he would not speak, because no dissatisfaction arises in Arahants. "If the state of preceptor and teacher is not allowed only for an Arahant, then why are the five qualities of an Arahant mentioned?" it asks, "Yasmā panā" and so on. "Connection" means because it is not diminished. "Antaggāhikāya" means it grasps or causes to grasp the extreme, the evil, called eternalism and annihilationism. is by it. By view, it means by wrong view. As much as heard, it means as much as heard, as stated in the Bhikkhunis' Admonition training rule (Pāci. Aṭṭha. 145-147). By that, it means by what is heard. The connection is: "Whatever offense, etc., should be known by that." Regarding "does not know an offense," to show the meaning "does not know that one has committed an offense," it says, "this is called..." There, by "committed," it shows that the word "offense" should be connected with the remaining part of the phrase "has committed." Regarding "by the rules of good conduct," here, "good conduct" means to conduct oneself especially well, beyond the precepts included in both Vibhaṅgas. It refers to the rules of conduct and practice included in the Khandhakas. The training rule established concerning that is "by the rules of good conduct," the training included in the Khandhakas, by that. Regarding "by the primary holy life," here, the "primary holy life" is the beginning boundary of the holy life, which is the path. That which occurs in it is "by the primary holy life," the training included in both Vibhaṅgas, by that. Regarding "by the Sekkha-paññatti," "Sekkhā" means training because it is to be learned.
