"That" is the Sangha-meal. Discourse on the Designated Meal This method is to be known thus. Or "sent by the king" is the connection. "If there are" means if there are those with a turn. "By the designator" means by the meal-designator. "Should not be exceeded" means the designated meal should not be exceeded. "But those" means but the alms-round bhikkhus. "Having set aside the turn" means having set aside the turn in its established place, that is, having released it. "Of those" means of the great elders. "Even for those who have not arrived" means even for those who have not arrived at the place of meal designation. "An extended boundary" means an extended precinct boundary. Sangha-new To whom given? Until the second part is not given, even if given to a new monk of the Sangha. By seniority in years: It is counted, so it is "gaṃ". The connection is: among monks waiting for the mealtime, seated. The connection is: some person says. The meaning is: "Give the Sangha's assignment-bowl" or so. "This is the method" means it refers to the same by putting a monk in place of the bowl when it is said. Herein means in the assignment-meal, or in such a statement. Pesala means of pleasing conduct. By him means by the assigner. How does he know? He says: "obtained by one of ten years." The connection is: of that assigner, the statement. Appasadda means of soft sound. "Apasadda" is also a reading, meaning noiseless. Of the very newest means of the newest of all monks. Even when asked in the shade means locative of disregard, or genitive. Does not obtain means does not obtain because it is made to reach. Even of one seated, even of one sleeping means genitive of disregard, meaning even of a monk seated, even of one sleeping. Indeed means truly. The meaning is: this is called a divisible item. Therein means in the statement "it is obtained only by one who has arrived." By precinct means by a twelve-cubit precinct. In that means in the inner enclosure. The connection is: some lay follower sends. With excellent foods means with excellent foods. With water means with water, the connection is: having filled. People who have come means samba The blind one. By which monk. They go to the object. Surrounded by three robes, it means surrounded by three robes, or having three robes as a retinue, that is, a designated meal. Indeed, such is the special merit of that monk, this is the connection. If even water is his special merit, why does he receive another designated meal? He says, "But water..." and so on. Those people came having taken it, this is the connection. To them, to the Mahātheras and so on. By young novices, by young novices, received, this is the connection. There, at the designated meal. In front, in front of the Mahātheras. Bowls, bowls for the Sangha's designated meal, not yet taken, this is the connection. Even the designated meal brought, this is the connection. One speaks, this is the connection. A dismissed messenger means one who has dismissed his own preference and is dismissed according to the other's preference. Or a bowl received in due order, a bowl received from the Sangha in due order, this is said with reference to an invited meal. Whatever he wishes, whatever the dismissed messenger wishes. He, that fool, should not be spoken to, this is the connection. He should speak in the manner of questioning, this is the connection. From that, from the reason for speaking. Those with a "peak-standing" rule means a rule that, having been mixed with other designated meals and proceeded in a straightforward manner, proceeds with a peak. Elaborating on that very point, he says, "Or indeed of the king..." and so on. Single-person meals means meals to be eaten by making one person the focus, that is, single-person meals, it means to be eaten by making one person the focus without mixing with other designated meals, those very meals are single-person meals. The meaning is: Let only monks come, without taking the bowl, let only monks come. He does not lead the newcomers who do not know the rule. That should not be taken: that food should not be taken for the rule, because it is little. They will lead: for the newcomers. It is a neck: it is a debt. A debt is a nature to be repaid, therefore, the meaning is: it should be repaid. Here: in the place where one has eaten without knowing the rule. One should sit for that long: one should wait and sit for that long. Taking by the bowl-place is also like a neck, this might be the opinion of the former elder. If this is so, the dispute of the two elders is the same. One alms-round: this is the connection. Such a one: one with the three robes, worth a hundred. This: is the alms-round. Thus it is said in the commentaries. One monk: this is the connection. One who drops in between: in the middle of the special meal, it falls, it drops, thus one who drops in between. One who has completed the rains, who is a novice: this is the construction. For that novice who has been ordained, the rule is exceeded: this is the connection. That one: the monk who has received the special meal. Near: near himself. If they steal that: if those who take bowls steal that bowl. It is a neck: it is a neck for the giver of the bowl. That monk: that monk sitting near. His: of the giver of the bowl. The reading "Ayaṃ" is in the books, but it is not good. From there: from the house of the special meal. Showing the meaning of the word "suhaṭo" (well-brought), he says: "because the food is given, it is not a neck." One who approves: one who approves the special meal, this is the connection. Having caused food to be brought with ten bowls: this is the construction. Named a monk's gift: named a gift by a monk. That monk: the approver. O bhikkhus. Those bhikkhus are the bhikkhus on almsround. “Come, sirs, be my companions,” thus having said, is the connection. “His” means the lay follower’s. “There” means at the lay follower’s house. “His very own” means of the one who accepts. “The others” are the new alms-round bhikkhus.
